New 44 magnum rifling
« on: March 29, 2007, 05:12:05 AM »
I was able to make a brief visit to my favorite gun store yesterday and got a look at a 44 magnum Handi. First thing I did was take a look down the barrel and it did not appear to be Micro-groove rifling.  I understand that previous 44 mag Handi's were microgroove, is that correct?

The serial number previx was HX, which I believe makes it of 2007 manufacture.  This dealer has numerous Handi's in stock, one is a 45-70 in a synthetic stock that still has an ejector.  While a new rifle, it has been on the shelf for a while.  It is worthwhile to check out the serial number Handi rifles when you find one that interests you.

That's good news. Hopefully they changed the twist rate also. My 45-70 I bought last year has an ejector also it is a 2006 model.

darat100 (sorry about the last post, my computer keyboard is sensitive),

You hit the nail on the head, I was there briefly yesterday.  For those that are not familiar, Mr. Whittaker has lots of Handis and Ultras in stock along with numerous Rossi's and Remington's Spartans.  You can order from them, they willingly ship.  You can find info at www.whittakerguns.com

Yesterday they had two 45-70s, a 450 Marlin, a 500 magnum and 44 magnum along with numerous other calibers.  There must be plenty of single shot shooters around here.  He also stocks the new CVA's and plenty of Thompson Centers.  He even had a Thompson in 416 Rigby.  I say had because someone must have purchased that beast, it is gone now.

darat100, I live in Bowling Green and only get up there every few months.  Where do you live.

I am in henderson.  according to the h&r website, you have several dealers down that way.  why do you drive all the way to whittakers?  I know he has good selection, but that is quite a haul.

That new ejector fitted 45-70 would be a boon to many here that want an ejector barrel for hunting. How many times in the classifieds have you seen the question "does it have an ejector or extractor" when someone posts a barrel for sale....<><....  :)

I was at Gander Mt yesterday in Pittsburgh and they had about 4 Handies in stock. They had a 204  223   243  30-06 I was surprised because the GM near me never has any in stock. They were going for $229.00

Going to Whittaker is like a kid going into a candy store. That is why you get three or four of your friends together and go see the big man.

darat100,

It is a haul, but it is worth it.  I travel all over Kentucky with and have never found a store with the selection or prices that Whittakers has.  The only place I have ever been that compared was Scheels in Minot North Dakota when I was in the Air Force.  We have several stores here in Bowling Green, but nothing like the selection he has, at least in long guns.  He has more used stock than most stores have all together.

I went there with my brother-in -law on one rainy Saturday and the place was absolutely packed.  We had to park across the street with about 15 other cars. There were probably 50-60 people in the store.   It is worth the drive to me.

There is one bad thing though.  If you see something you like, you better make up your mind fast because it may not stay there long.

Howdy.  Xhare mentioned that his new 44 mag rifiling looked different then the older 44 barrels begging the question of whether NEF has finally changed their 44 mag barrels.  Have they ??  Are these new barrels good ones?  (Past posts have suggested that I'd be wasting my $$$ on a 44 mag.  :-\)  Anybody have and used one of the "new" barrels?

I really want a 44 mag but ONLY if is going to be an excellent shooter !! ;D   Thanks     Marcos

Thanks for the info, Tim,  :)  This sounds most promising.  I'll probably call NEF tomorrow and inquire about the new 44 mags.  I want to be sure that they aren't the old ones that some members have complained about.  Got my fingers crossed !!!   :D     Marcos
