New .280 is ready for the range.(Now a report)
« on: March 31, 2007, 11:45:28 AM »
Well after 9 weeks my HV Ultra receiver returned from H&R Tuesday afternoon via the big brown truck with my new .280 Remington barrel fitted to it. Last night I ran a tight patch down it and it was smooth all the way thru, think I'll skip the bore prep on this one and just go shoot it. Surprisingly bright in the bore and the rifling looks clean and maybe a little deeper than in some of my other barrels. Mounted a 6-18x50 Bushnell Banner in Leupold Rifleman #55870 rings, this will make a good low light, late evening hog gun I hope. This is also my first ever extractor barrel, so I'll get to see how I like that too.
Hopefully I'll get some shooting time tomorrow evening. Got some old/new Rem Core-Lokts and some Speer Nitrex w/160 gr. Grand Slam bullets. I'll be taking a Savage 93R-17FV also that I recently purchased used, less than 75 rounds thru it. It's wearing a Japanese Tasco 6-24x44 (Thanks Tim) and I'll be getting it ready to go to Hooker, OK in June for the prarie dog hunt. If I get time and if they shoot good enough to brag about then I'll post some groups tomorrow.

Got to the range and I'm not sure if I'm happy with this one or not. Performed in typical Handi fashion shooting either 2" low or to the right or left from a hot bore. I believe the Nitex is shooting 2" high at 100 right now but I can't even feel sure about that. Started out sighting in at 25 yards with the Core-Lokts and then moved out to 100 where the Rems produced a 3/4" group from a warmed up bore. Then I went to the Nitrex. First shot was 3" low, adjusted the scope and the second shot was 1 1/2" low. Adjusted the scope again to where it should be and let the bore cool. Next shot was 3" high.  :-\ After this it was just crazy trying to get a group with the Nitrex and not being patient enough to let he bore cool all the way between shots, and pulling the occasional shot because :o DANG :o the .280 is a healthy round in the Handi! It was getting close to dark and my patience wasn't what it should have been with letting the barrel cool btween shots. Anyway, I know I shot 15 of the Nitrex ammo and never could print a decent group.  I'll try another Core-Lokt from a cold bore one afternoon this week and see if I can get another 3 shot group. Shame the Nitrex isn't good in this one for the price I got it at, $12 a box. But I guess it's gonna like the 150 grain Core-Lokts best like so many other .280 Handis do. I have 5 Nitrex rounds left and I will try them again too and really be patient and see if I get a good group fom them also, I'd really like for them to work in this one. My shoulder sure knows I burnt some ammo today though.  :)
The Savage was a breeze to sight in and printed two solid 5/8" groups at 100 yards. I'm pretty happy with that from a .17. I think with a little more time and a better trigger it will be a one hole shooter.

John:

Well...at least the Corelocs did good for ya... ;)

You know what they say..."Patience is a virtue"...Clean it up good...and try it again...but take your time shooting it...Mine did good with the 140's of each I shot when I had it..but I wasn't rushing it when shooting it either...How much clearance on the forearm do you have...? I had quite a bit of clearance on mine and a super trigger job done by Jon at the factory...which defiantly helped with the groups...Heck...at $12 a box...you can always use a Kinetics bullet puller on it and bump them out a bit further towards the lands just to see if it helps...Don't give up hope on it Bro...the 280's are some great barrels for our Handi's...and knowing you it will be shooting good in no time at all.....How do you like the extractor?

Hang in there John, it'll come around, just take your time and work it out! Shoot the .280 three rounds at a time, a minute or so apart, then put it in the rack and burn some 17hmr ammo until the 280 cools, that's what I do and it works great. That's why I take so many rifles with me to the range, then I never have to shoot a hot barrel.  I don't like hangin around the range waitin on barrels to cool, I'm probably just as impatient as you or anyone in that respect! ;)

I was out with my new .280 yesterday. I too have a problem waiting for a cool barrel before shooting another round. What I did was clean the bore after 3 rounds. I was shooting reloads with IMR4350 for the first time and wanted to see how that did. Another thing I do to wait on a cool barrel is take the walk down range to check the target. A lot of walking but the barrel is cool when you get back. Found that the .280 didn't like the 4350 as well as the other powders.

Maybe I'll try to pick up a box of Federal Premium with the 140 grain Nosler BT or Solid Base bullet next time I'm at the ammo dealer. thing about it, I'll have plenty of brass formed to the chamber on this thing when it comes time to reload a few for it. One thing about it, I'll have plenty of brass formed to the chamber on this thing when it comes time to reload a few for it. I did kinda like the extractor too. It takes a little getting used to but for range work it's great. Might be a different story in the field.
Quick I usually have my .22 LR with me at the range for the cooling time, but time was an issue yesterday for sure. I'll bring it with me next time.
