Weaver pivot sight mounts?
« on: April 01, 2007, 01:46:27 PM »
Hi all,

I am new to this board and recently purchased my first handi rifle chambered in 45-70. I have been shopping around looking for new sights/scope mounts for my handi rifle. I live in Canada and getting any kind of sight out of the US is expensive. The ghost ring set for this rifle is going to cost me $140 if I choose to go with it. My second choice is a WGRS rear peep sight and fire sight also going to run me about $120.  I have a 4x38 EER scope that I ordered for a scout rifle I was going to build before I started playing with my handi rifle. Well it turns out the handi rifle bug has bitten me and I am a lost soul now. I would like to mount a scope and be able to pivot it out of the way to use iron sights when need.

My question is do any of you know the weaver pivot rail number that will fit the handi rifle? Or any pivot type system that would fit my rifle.  Or am I better off going with the ghost ring/williams sight combo's?  I plan to cast my own 405 grain bullets and load with either AA 2495 or RL-7

I plan later to purchase a buffalo classic and load it with black powder to hunt deer with. (no buffalo up here ) :'(

Welcome to GBO , as far as the mount , no one that i know makes such an item for the handi , the 2 H&Rs and a Weaver 82 are the only mounts that i know of . you may be able to get a smith to mod one to fit the rifle ( maybe ) .

Given the options i would go with the peep sight or a standard scope , sorry .

Welcom, 7.62man. Like Stimpy says, I've never heard of a pivot base that would fit a Handi. And it shouldn't be too hard for a smith to make a couple of extra holes in one if you can find one that fits the radius of the Hand barrel (if not, see a couple of sentences below).

As for the aperture sights, if you have a barrel with factory sights you should be able to use just the WGRS rear sight mounted in the holes for the scope mount. Sound a bit excessive to pay $120 (even in Canadian dollars) for the whole set. I have used the WGRS rear sight with the factory front sight on a 357 mag, a 357 max, and a 30/30. Even modified a rear aperture from something else and screwed it on one for awhile. (put a piece of emery cloth rough side up on the rear of the barrel and sanded the heck out of it to get the right profile/radius for the Handi barrel).

Where in Canada are you eh? I lived in Kamloops and Vancouver Island for awhile - also near Peterborough ON.

Cheers

Welcome aboard!! Another option would be to go with quick detach rings like Leupold or Warne, and carry the NEGC Weaver mount rear aperture sight for when needed. I dunno how consistent the zero would be maintained with the rear sight, I do know that the QD rings are very consistent, but it's one option you might consider. NEGC ships to Canada. You may also need to replace the front sight with a higher sight due to the high position of the aperture.

I know the scope mount he is referring to.Weaver used to make a "swing away" scope mount.I'm not sure if they still make it.
