Recoil vs barrel lenght
« on: March 25, 2007, 09:57:35 AM »
I have a 10" contender in 44mag it has a factory muzzle tamer on it making it 11 1/8 oal.  My 15yr old started shooting it last fall and is pretty good with it for a beginner.Only problem is he isn't fond of the recoil. Would going to a super 14 with the same muzzle tamer help out any or make it worse? I am thinking the added weight couldn't hurt, what are your thoughts???

It will reduce it a bit, also will lessen the muzzle flip.
.357's &.41mag's. are no slouchs out of a contender.

Without actually shooting and chronographing both lengths I couldn't be certain. However the longer barrel will add weight which will help lessen recoil, but then the longer barrel will also increase velocity which will increase recoil.

In the formula I use for calculating recoil, factors included in the equation are, Powder Charge, Bullet Weight, Muzzle Velocity and Gun Weight. It would depend on if the added weight off set the increased muzzle velocity as to which will recoil more.

I can tell you from experience, having once owned a 10" Bull barreled 44mag for 4 years and switching to a 14" bull barrel 44mag, there is a noticible reduction in felt recoil with top loads. YOu don't have as much muzzle jump and the added weight helps with the recoil, but this is without a muzzle tamer also.

I would imagine with a muzzle brake, the recoil with a 14" would not be much of an issue at all.

Good Shooting,

HL

In his seminal work with Larry Kelly, Shooting Steel, JD Jones stated that the recoil of a 14" Contrender was notably higher than a 10" version with the same .44 Magnum loads.  I haven't fired both side-by-side - the only  way to be able to tell for certain - but I'll take JD's word for it, he has.

banjoman, have you considered reducing    your sons loads?.Being so young it may help him to NOT develop a flinching habit.
As he gets older and has more experience under his belt increase the loads,or bullet WTS.Just a thought.
AS a side note,i glad to see you shooting with your son. Many of us are not taking our children out with us,boy OR girl.pan.

Another thing not mentioned here is the muzzletamer itself. Does this one increase the noise factor from this gun like it does in a rifle ?I'd try what was mentioned above about the reduced loads and use lead bullets instead of jacketed. My Encore with its 12" 44 barrel is pretty comfortable with 240gr. lead bullets but things heat up a little when using jacketed ones. Just a thing or 2 to ponder...

Thanks for the input guys. I am reloading some starter ammo for him the next time we go out. He really does shoot it pretty good with full house loads just doesn't like to spend any extended time with it. I have also traded the 10" for a 14"  so now he/we will have a new toy to play with. Hopefully he can take a deer with it this fall. I also need to get the scope mounted on the .223 barrel that should be fun for him to shoot as well.
