What have I got? Options?
« on: April 05, 2007, 05:50:35 PM »
First of all, I am an avid shooter and have numerous rifles and handguns.  I can load for 50+ calibers in the room next to this one.  I have 5 guns ready to shoot a match on saturday.  I know rifles, TCs, revolvers, etc.  I do not know diddly about NEF/H&R other than I recently picked up a couple cheaper than I could get a similar barrel for my contenders.

OK, so I got a cheap .223 bull barrel that serial number starts with HT.  (shoots under 4" groups at 450 yards!)
I also picked up a Wally World special .410/22lr convertible with serial number that starts with NW.  (great little gun for the jeep)

Now I see lots of barrels for sale.  OK, can I purchase NEF/H&R barrels the same as I purchase my contender barrels?  Will they all fit up to these receivers/actions?  NEF/H&R barrels right now are lots less expensive than the TC carbine barrels.  Can I enter a new niche and join your fraternity here and start collecting barrels?

OK, from the info listed above, can you tell me what I have and my options for additional barrels?  Please feel free to drop me an email at "shaggy357@aol.com" if you don't want to reply here.

Additional barrels have to be fitted to your action at the factory. Theoretically they are not interchangeable.

But they are inexpensive and you have many choices of calibers, barrel types etc.

The factory does have a barrel program that you could send your receiver back to them and have it fitted with an assorment of barrels or you could buy one off the classified adds here for much less than a encore barrel and fit it your self with the help of this forum.

About the only thing a Contender and a Handi have in common is that they are single shots.  There is no comparison in the tolerances they are held to.  Larry

There has been many a post concerning this kind of thing, and thats alright in my book. Seems many find themselves in your situation, and find how affordable they can be and the options you are opened up too.
If you are not afraid to tinker, you will find that it is very easy to fit up a used barrel to your receiver, unless it has a lot of side to side play then shimming is in order and takes a little more time. Many times all it will take is a little fileing on the hinge pin area of the underlug of the barrel. Sometimes they will lock up perfect.
And as was mentioned, the price of new fitted from factory barrels are not bad either:

I just depends on a gamble, and a small usually easy to fix one at that, if it isn't "just right".

You have about a 50/50 chance of a used barrel fitting fine with no changes, I just got 2 used frames today, the first barrel I tried on one of em locked up tighter than Ft Knox, latch engagement is perfect, barrel to frame gap is zero, that's a heck of a lot better that I can say for 2 Prohunter barrels on my Encore that have a heck of a frame-barrel gap. There's no guarantee that you'll get a used barrel that will fit since H&R barrels aren't a one-size-fits-all, but they can fit perfect or they may not even be close and require quite a bit of fitting. About $100 fitted by the factory and 6-10 weeks wait and you'll be good to go with a new barrel. ;)

Thanks for all of the replies.  I have fit many many contender barrels to my six frames.  I read thru all the FAQs and appears this is a neat deal.  My .223 NEF will not come even close to shooting as well as my contenders, but for the price, I would buy several of them.  I will look for some barrels and fit them up.   I appreciate the help.  These are great little guns to plink around with.

you might have to work on that .223 H&R you have Steve. My H&R/NEF .223 with a regular contour barrel actually shoots as good or better than my H&R/NEF .223 with a Bull Barrel. Consistent sub 1/2" groups at 100 yards off a bench. These guns can shoot with the best of them with a little TLC and with their favorite load. If your .223 is not shooting well now stick around, it will be...Nice to have you with us here in Handi-Land....<><.... :)

Ooops!!! :-[ :-[, I am embarrassed, I just reread Steve P's post. I know see he said it shoots "shoots under 4" groups at 450 yards", I thought he said "4" at 100 yards"!!!! As Sourdough said that is good shooting, especially for a gun you just bought. Congratulations to both you and your gun shooting for well Steve P....<><.... :)

Under 4" group at 450yards.  Sounds good to me.  Go shoot some varmits.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
