The choices are!!!!
« on: April 10, 2007, 12:46:40 PM »
Well I think I will send my receiver off this week for some new barrels. These are my choices.
  • 25-06 Rem. 26''
  • 30-06 Spring. 22''
  • 243 Win. 24'' bull barrel
I also want a 45-70 but I think I will buy the Marlin 1895 for it. So what do you think of my choices? The 30-06 will be my deer gun and the other 2 will be for reaching out to varmints.
 ;D

All of em including the 45-70, take your pick on what to get first! ;)

All three choices would be good for deer and all three would be good for varmints, just depends on how you load them.  I used to use a 30-06 for varmints with 110 grain bullet at about 3200+ fps, no groundhog ever got away if I hit it with one of those 110 gr hollow points.

While I've never had a 25-06 or a .243 I've read that they do well on deer with heavier bullets.  I've been lusting after a .280....another hunting/varmint combo.

Whichever you pick I'm sure you will be satisfied.

I love the 25-06.  It and my 357 max are the only handis that wouldn't be for sale at the right price.  It is extremely accurate and shoots so many different bullets well.  You can load way down for varmints or up to 120 for deer.  This gun is as close as you can come to a do everything gun in my opinion.

Good luck.  You can't go wrong with any of them.

This is just a start. I feel like I could cover alot of hunting with these to start. I could only wish to do what Quick has done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like I said a 45-70 is on my short list and I hope to add it before the end of the year. But it will be in the Marlin 1895. This way I can hunt hogs with Goodwrench with out worrying about being eaten by them.

I would drop the 25 out for the 45-70 and put the 25 on the next list.  I hunt deer with 2 calibers my primary is the 45-70 the other is the 30.

I think the 06 and 243 will cover most anything for distance but nothing beats the 45-70 in the heavy woods and brush.

I tried to post on this earlier, then stuck in a smiley and wiped out the whole thing.  Got frustrated and said forget it.

I'd get the 25-06.  It's springtime, will take 8 weeks to get a barrel, so middle of June.  Just in time to work up a load for deer and use it on varmints, and to get used to the bullet drop for deer season.  You'll be all set by then.  AFTER you get a deer, send it back for the other barrels.

This way you can hunt varmints, and deer, and eventually get all the other barrels too.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Dale

Here let me spend your money .

Get the 30/06 , this is a no-brainer

Get the 25/06 , will do P-gogs to Deer

Get the 45/70 , will take just about anythiing in North America that walks or crawls or flys . ( No s.s. for big brown Bears )

243 would be nice but what can you do with a 24" 243 that you can't do with a 26" 25/06 .

Just my $ .02

The 25-06 & 280 would be my first choices...followed by the 45-70...Then I think a nice 30-30 & 357 would rank right up there for just plain fun to shoot...and your right...that 243 Bull barrel is a good choice as well...Lots of good ones to choose from... and all it takes is a little extra cash & time...
