What is a TC worth
« on: May 16, 2003, 03:13:20 AM »
I have a friend who is getting out of the silhouette shooting game and wants to sell his Hunter Class Small Bore gun.  It is a late model Contender with a 10 inch match barrel.  He is keeping his scope but will leave the mount and rings on the barrel.  I think they are Weaver.  He is a wood worker and has made his own custom grip that fits his hand perfectly, I don't know if it will fit mine so I may need to get a grip for it.

He told me to make an offer and I don't know what it is worth so if you have any ideas let me know.

Thanks, Sixgun
You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

Bare frame goes for about $175-200 from Ed's, grips $10-15, barrel $150 in good condition. All together $325-350, now if it's in GREAT shape that could go up to $400 or even higher depending on the type barrel (custom barrel on a high quality blank etc.) Brand new a weaver mount in under $8 and the rings aren't much more so used they're not adding much to the price. The custom grips could add or take away depending on if you like them. Of course take this with a "this is what I'd pay for it, if I wanted it" grain of salt. Don't do sihouette shooting so it might have some specialty value I don't know about. I'd be buying it for the frame and trade off the rest for a nice hunting barrel that's why I priced it as parts.

I wouldn't pay more than $200, and it would have to be in excellent condition.  I'm particularly wary of used silhouette pistols because some can be quite worn.

Sixgun, helobill is about right on the money with his reply. If you can get it any cheaper than that you had better jump on it. You aren't going to find many for $200 unless the person selling has absolutely no idea what he is holding. TC's are easy to rebuild, so in the unlikely event that it is worn much, it isn't a problem to bring it up to "snuff". Russ

Questor brings up a good point, check the barrel out really well. Sillywet shooters tend to shoot a lot and the barrel could be pretty worn, but could is the operative word. Since he's a friend, ask him how much he shot it, and ask to shoot it and see how it groups. Group size growth is usually the first sign of a "shot-out" barrel. Again, depending on what it started as (factory, stainless, AA, custom) how much he shot it and what he shot (cast bullets, FMJ, hot loads, etc) will determine how many is too many. Barrel could be worthless (or make a nice tent peg) or it could be just fine. You didn't say what caliber the barrel is and that can make a difference on life also.
