old Topper with a second 30/30 barrel?
« on: April 02, 2007, 04:15:41 PM »
I saw a used topper 20 ga. with a 2nd barrel a 30/30 today at a Cabelas. The serial no. started with AU so it was an old one, 1980 vintage I think. I thought the shotguns weren't capable of firing a centerfire cartridge? I am confused.

That was made back before there was a separate shotgun and rifle frame, all old H&Rs are on just one frame.

Actually these older toppers are fairly nice items and light to boot. I would really look into it. Unless it was overpriced (above $220-$225) I would not be afraid of it. I have one of these older barrels mated to an NEF frame and like it very much. A relative of mine has an older topper 30-30 and likes his as well.

they wanted 199 for it, but I am more in the market for a 22lr  barrel right now and am looking at a pistol too so this one isn't high on my priority list.

If I lived there that would be tempting, but as a internet purchase, the FFL handling fees charged around here put it right up there with the one I saw in the store.

That is a real problem everywhere. Years ago there used to be great little Mom & Pop dealers who would do the paperwork for a rerasonable fee. They were harassed and run out of business by the ATF under Democratic leadership. Now the few bigger ones left in business charge all outdoors for 5 minutes of paperwork. The cheapest around here is $40, unless it has gone up!!! By the way, he won't do habdguns, only rifles and shotguns. For handguns the cheapest in thea area is $50!!!....<><.... ???

MSP, there are numerous dealers listed on the MA dealer list that charge $15-$20, dunno how current that list is, or how close any  are to you, but it's worth checking out. My dealer charges less than what's listed for her on that list. ;)

Thanks Quick, I have checked and rechecked that list many times and made several calls  looking for the "silver bullet" to no avail. The nearest FFL to me on the Cape is just over 50 miles one way (53.2 IIRC) and with gas now at $2.73 and my truck getting about 12 miles per gallon the $20 guys I have to travel to are no savings, not even a break even. There was one guy that was listed at $15 but when he returned my call and in conversation I mentioned his $15 transfer fee he said it was not $15 but $20 or $25  depending on what it was (?). I mentioned that he was listed as $15 and he said he changed his fee a while ago but it never got changed on the list....<><.... :(
