anyone here do plating

Dustin linebaugh gave me a blued 4440 cylinder and id like to get it plated to match the bead blasted stainless on the 44 project.

Lloyd,  I'll check with a guy I work with.  He has been restoring some old bicycles and has been getting some chrome plating done in the Grand Rapids area.  The small operator has been polishing the parts and then someone else has been doing the plating.  The plating looks good.  I think it was triple plated, but I'm not sure what type of plating is available.   What type finish are you looking for?   Now if you find someone that does silver plating, let me know.

Checked with the guy at work.  He said the guy did great work on old bike parts, but probably got a little to aggressive with the polishing for doing a cyclinder.

Check with Robbie Barkham at Robar he should be able to give you anything you want in an applied finish. I think his NP3 comes in a saten gray.

I got some super huge carbiners with what appears to be nickel plating rusting. They were "rejects" and given to me free.

I'm not using them for safety equipment. If the company threw them out there may be other issues too I can't see. 

Here's my question:

Is there a way to know if you've got poor plating before it starts to rust?

I can't imagine purchasing a firearm, bringing it in from the field on a rainy day and finding the above rust bleeding thru

Go over to the Gander Mountain in Marquette and ask him about it.  The gunsmith at the one here in Fargo has this "paint" that he puts on; kinda' like Black-T, and bakes it.  I have seen it in brushed stainless and it looks like the real deal.  The finish is really tough, too.

Bear fat in my experinece you cant totaly trust and kind of plating to prevent rust. You about still have to treat them as you would a blued gun. There may be some majic one out there but i havent found it yet. Once they scratch and they all will there suseptable to rust. I found a stainless 4440 cyl too so i dont really need to have the blued one plated now.
