KS Mountain Rifle Stocks
« on: March 29, 2007, 05:24:17 PM »
I have a Model 700 Mountain Rifle in 7mm-08 that I bought new around 1988 or 89.  Although I like the looks of the original wood stock, I do travel quite a bit and this rifle is usually what has ended up going with me over the years, so the stability of a synthetic has been something that I have thought about.  I have found a new OEM Remington KS Mountain Rifle stock on ebay and was wondering what others have thought of this stock.  Just how good is it and is it worth a couple hundred dollars?  Thanks.

Hi Brian,

I have a KS Mtn Rifle in 06 that I bought in 1995.  The kevlar stock is made by McMillin.  It's nice and worth the money new.  I'd probably not be willing to pay more than $200 for used one.

Doug,
Thanks for the reply.  I have been considering a Brown Precision or McMillan for years, never being able to stomach any of the cheaper factory stocks that seem so common these days.   The fact that McMillan made it is even better.  I actually have already ordered the stock, since the place I bought it from has a money back guarantee, I figured if by some chance I did not like it, I could send it back.  Should be here in the next couple days.  I know that it has aluminum pillar bedding blocks, but you would not happen to know if Remington still used any kind of bedding compound around the action and also, did they still use a pressure point on the barrel?

Hi Brian,

Mine is bedded..you bet.  Tried to remove the action once and it was just aweful.  The action is bedded and the barrel is free floated on my gun.

Received my stock yesterday and I got to say I was surprised!  This thing is very nice and anyone who has ever considered a composite stock, I definately recommend spending the extra money and getting something other than the molded plastic junk that seem to be so common these days.  At a little over $200, and considering the quality of construction, this was a really good deal.  I had originally planned on doing my own little paint job to give it a personal look, but once I had the piece in my hands, I'll just say pictures do not do it justice and I'm going to leave it as is.  It fits my rifle very well and the only thing that I did not anticipate was needing a different trigger guard and the extra front bolt, since the stock is not built for the trigger guard assembly with a floorplate that originally came on my rifle.
