ditch the buttpad
« on: April 06, 2007, 04:52:34 PM »
I'm looking to replace the buttpad on my sb2 ultra rifle with a thin hard buttplate. Will the plate off a "H&R 20ga Topper 58" be even a remotely close fit? Are the topper and handi stocks pretty much the same size? I'm going to refinish and slim the whole stock up so it doesn't have to be an exact fit, just close-ish.

It might or it might not, 2 screws on each and find out, that is the only way to know for sure. If the holes don't line up for the screws that's no problem, just drill new ones where you need them. You will never know with the new or old one installed.  Good luck and let us know how it works out....<><....   :)

I have ditched mine as well.  Most rifles are made for somebody 6' tall.  I am only 5'7" and I find that most rifles have a length of pull too long for my arm.  Consequently I have a drawer full of 1" stock ends.  Anyway, with my handi 280, I split the flat part of a moose antler and carved a rather nice buttplate that is only 1/4' thick.  This reduces LoP by 3/4" and it fits perfect.  Also looks good.  I liked it so much I did it again on another rifle.  Use a meat saw or hack saw to split the antler and the dremel does the rest.

I'm 5' 9" tall but I to find a 14" length of pull too much!  I usually cut any rifles I own to a shade over 13" and find that much more comfortable.  I have never been hesitant to alter a gun to work better for me and my topper 30-30 out being done now.  I want to do my BC also, but I just haven't gotten enough courage to chop on that beautiful stock yet!  Enjoy.  44 Man

oops, I missed the post yesterday. I'm tall so I don't really need a shorter legnth of pull, mostly I am sick of the grippy pad snagging my shirt, and mine is poorly fitted anyway. mostly I wanted to make sure a topper stock wasn't drastically different from a handi.

Its amazing how much a heavy jacket affects your length of pull.  I have only been hunting for 3 years now.  I am having to learn all of this stuff at the ripe age of 37.
