A fondling I must go.....

Went to the gunshop to fondle my Target model.    Sure do like the look and feel of it.  I like the balance of it better than the BC I had.  I cannot claim it till Tuesday (according to CA I have to "cool" off first ) After going through their laws, one DOES need to cool off.  I want it NOW!

Anyway, I noticed it's an extractor model, which is cool since this isn't planned on being a hunting rifle, well, maybe not.

I have an idea for the sight, not sure if I want to spend the $300-400 or more for an actual scope or build what they called a "tube sight".  Some of the scopes are very cool, but I've read some instances that they're NOT cool for hunting.

I may just use a regular scope to test loads, and save up for something nice and period looking.

I got my Target model a little over a year ago but had to wait 3 months for NEF to build a new supply.  It was worth the wait.  I wrestled with the same issue you are wrestling with on the sights.  The aperture sight that comes on the rifle is sufficient if you will only be shooting at one distance and use 'Kentucky Windage" to compensate for wind drift.  I seriously contemplated the accessory Williams sight that H&R offers for about $60 and would have bought it except that my eyes are starting to deteriorate with age.  Ended up putting a 4X scope on the rifle.  Were my eyes as good as they used to be I would have gone with the Williams accessory sight.

As an aside, I really like the 38-55 cartridge, easy to load and fun to shoot.  You might want to slug the barrel if you are going to cast your own bullets so that you can get the correct sizing die.

I plan on slugging the barrel before a shot is fired!  Loads and choices will be the result of that.  I'm hopefull to use black powder and cast bullets only, if it will cooperate.

What a shame, that waiting period. I was at my gunsmith's shop when he told me he could do the .405 Winchester out of a .38-55 Target for sure, I drove into Portland, bought the .38-55 Target and took it back to him and left it for boring and rechambering, took a little more than an hour to buy it and drive 20 miles back to his place!!

We do have a one week waiting period on a handgun without a CC permit tho.

If you plan on casting and loading your own you might want to do a search on this web site for 35-55 or Target Rifle for tips.  The chamber and bore dimensions of my Target Rifle, and others I think, is a little different than what you would expect.  Nothing insurmountable, but worthy of attention if you are loading your own. 

My bore dimension was a little larger than the maximum size I could fit in the chamber.  Some folks polish or ream the chamber a bit.  I didn't do anything to mine and rely on the bullet upset to fill out the groves in the bore.  After I seat the bullet I run the cartridge into the sizing die again (decapper removed) to make sure that it fits the chamber.  Just make sure that your loaded cartridge fits the chamber before you go out to shoot so you won't be disappointed. 

I'm still breaking in my rifle and it seems to get better each time I shoot it.  Good rifle and cartridge and well worth the effort.  While I haven't tried factory ammunition in my rifle, my guess is it will function just fine.

Yes it is a pain, and doesn't makes sense to me.  I doubt they could ever show proof of anyone buying a long gun and using it right away in a crime, but proof and truth are not what gun laws are about, now are they?

It took me a little getting use to the new extractor system, but now I kinda like it for informal and target shooting. Still, for hunting I prefer the ejector system and I have barrels suited for that. I think you will be satisfied.
And I got to admit, there is nothing wrong with having 1 scope for just load development in a Handi. Not only will you be familiar with this scope, but the mounting on the Handi rail is very universal switching Handi to Handi, no need to slide the rings forward or backward if done correctly.

Nope, they sure aren't, Handi!

Man, talk about getting use to an extractor, try shooting 8 guns in one sitting, 6 were ejectors, 2 were extractors, every time I sat down with an extractor, I'd try to catch the brass, then when I got back to an ejector, the first one ended up on the floor too many times, made me feel like a real rookie, not just an old forgetful fool!!

In Texas, you don't have to get stomping mad before you buy a gun. How long do you have to wait if you are mad and want to steal one?

Here in Alaska, we go down and put down the money.  They make a phone call, while I do the Federal forms then I walk out with the gun.  If my wife buys it they don't make the phone call since she is NIX exempt with her carry permit.  She just lays down the money, fills out the forms, and walks.

I don't like the 10 day wait, but I can live with it, like I have a choice right now?  Anyway, I'll pick it up Tuesday afternoon.  First on the list is slug the bore and go from there.
