Loads for 41 mag 6.5'' Taurus RB?
« on: April 09, 2007, 02:06:46 AM »
Need help!  I've bought a Lee classic 4 hole turret press with carbide dies and factory crimp die. I've bought a individual 41 mag load manual and the modern reloading manual 2nd addition plus looked a lot on line and cant find a load using the rem jsp 210 bullet.  I've bought H110, rem cases and the salesmen recommended LP rem primers however it looks like with the H110 most of the manuals recommended mag primers and a very hard crimp for good powder burn using the H110.  I've been very happy with the factory load for the rem jsp taken 2 hogs now with them with complete past throughs. So with the lack of a defined load I am going to start with 19 grs of the H110 and work up to no more than 21 grs. Reading states that you definitely dont want to go to low with the H110 or ignition will be bad.  I'm just looking for like performance of the factory load? Does this sound OK? What do you recommend? Thanks for any info!

Coop

You should be in good shape , all the data that i have been able to fins shows between 19 and 22 grains of H110/Win296 ( same Powder )

I have used a bunch of both and your LP primers will be fine for this load .

http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

The Hogdon site shows a starting load of 19.8 and max of 22 so you probably want to bump up that starting load just a bit.
Just another worthless opinion!!

I load the Rem 210JSP with 20.5 H110 but with Win Large Pistol primers.  It is very accurate and chrono's at 1335 ft/sec at muzzle plus 10' out of my Ruger Blackhawk w/6.5" barrel.  I don't think I'd want to load much hotter than this in your Taurus and it is kind of a handful in my S.A.

Thanks all.  Luckyducker that's about what I was looking for.  I think the factory load showed about 1325.

coop,

I have found that 20.5 grs of either 110 / 296 shoot very well with bullets from 200 - 220. I use WIN/ WLP primers exclusively with these loads. I trim all cases when new, and then check lengths after every other loading.

Don't get too caught up in the " very heavy crimp " with your loads. I have been shooting 7.5" Redhawk this caliber for better than 20 years and have found that with just enough of a crimp to actually roll the lip of the case over into the grove of the bullet, you will get your best accuracy and not be slipping any bullets. Also when you size your cases you want just enough bell to actually be able to feel it with your fingernail, Much more than this will result in early split necks.

With my loads, 99% of them are loaded for hunting and will group tighter than I can hold out to 100yds. I shoot them on almost a weekly basis and the bullet you chose is a good one. I shoot the 200gr JHP from Remington but it is simply a personal choice. Either will dispatch the hogs readily.

You aren't going to get a better powder for your 41 than H110 or W296. You will have to use magnum primers and like has been said you only need to roll the case into the bullet groove to get good ignition and reliable lengths on your cartridges. That "factory crimp die might not work as well on the pistol cases as a good old fashioned roll crimp from your seating die. Try both (one at a time of course) and see which one works best for you.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.
