As a civilian no one makes me unload my gun at the end of a shift.   When I return home from a day of legal concealed carry I take off the holster ( a slip on paddle type ) and put the whole package in the small digital safe in the bedroom.  I and my wife know that the gun is loaded and ready.  The next day out I just slip the paddle behind my belt and go.  The slide never has to move.  The ammunition does not get battered back and shortened.  Short ammo causes high pressures.  The 40 S&W is already running at high pressures.  The chance of an AD is also reduced because the Glock trigger never gets out of the holster.  I would recommend this system to any civfilian or officer that can wear his duty gun all the way home.  Small, digital, quick open safes are found at Harbor Frieight for about $39.95 when on sale. Every responsible handgun owner should have one.

I'm still a big fan of the go and shoot your ammo method.  there have been many times where a gun has sat in the safe for a while when I have had a new gun, or just have been shooting others, and then when I get it back out, I realize my aim went all to heck because Ive gotten accustomed to another firearm. 


Its kind of like being lazy.  If you dont use it, you're going to lose it.

I am not a Glock fan, I will stick to my Sig. Kaboom is not going to happen just because someone clears there gun. I have been carrying for 25 years and never had a problem. I guess common sense goes a long way.

I don't have a problem with anyone that feels the need to lock their pistol up in a safe if that makes them feel safe. I've been carrying a pistol for 47 years now and never locked one up in a safe.  I just want to make sure mine is set and ready to go when it's needed most. Never had an accidental discharge during all those 47 years. I guess what I'm saying is; I just don't think my brain would kick in fast enough to unlock a safe and get it out when it was needed the most.

I have a safe in the basement with guns are locked up, but prefer my carry gun is next to me on the nightstand while I sleep.  The rest of the time it's with me/on me.
Any time I clear the chambered round to switch guns or clean them, I put the once chambered rounds in a coffee can.  When that gets full, I go shoot them up.

When I was a full time Deputy I never unloaded my pistol, I did rotate my ammo every few months to make sure I have good ammo, the old ammo that was in the gun gets shot up, not unloaded, then the gun is reloaded with fresh ammo.

I didn't have kids around so there wasn't a need to lock it up at night, but if you do have kids around it needs to be locked up!

My duty and carry guns are never unloaded unless it's for weapons inspection or cleaning. My safe is for guns I am not using or likely to need on short notice. All others are fully loaded and ready to go at all times. I never worry about NDs due to that pesky Glock trigger, I've found that as with other firearms, unless I pull the trigger they don't make any loud noises. We use up our duty ammo for qualifications twice a year, and load up freash ammo. That's basicllly to familarize us with the ammo we actually carry rather than low powered pratice ammo. That's the only reason. Contrary to what some believe, ammo doesn't spoil in our lifetime. Still it's good to shoot up your carry ammo for purposes of familarization with the full power stuff.

I own gun safes, but I decided it was easier to gun-proof my kids than try to child-proof a gun.  They were all raised around guns, got to shoot frequently, (sometimes more than they wanted to  ) and were told that any time they wanted to handle a firearm all they had to do was ask.  No forbidden fruit, no stupid rules.  No strangers in the house.  All guns were presumed to be loaded, because they always were.  When I go home at night these days it's just me and two cats, and there are loaded guns stashed in every room.  I live in a dangerous part of town, and nearly all the loaded guns hold the same ammo, for familiarity and consistency.  My duty gun also stays close by, but not on my duty belt.  And there are also speedloaders in every room for the revolvers I use.  A burglar would have a hard time finding the guns, but they are all a few feet away from wherever I might be in the house.  No paranoia, just an understanding of my surroundings, and the knowledge that you still can't make an appointment for an emergency!

I am the same as you, I never child proofed my guns. My kids were brought up with gun safety. It was not a big secret about guns and like you, my kids only had to ask if they wanted to handle or shoot any of my guns. Just like you, all guns are treated as if they are loaded. It is the people that don't educate there kids and teach proper gun safety, that have problems. My kids are 24 and 19 now and we NEVER had we had a gun related accident.

Papajohn, I don't think you are paranoid, I have several gun loaded in my house also,  as well as my carry guns.
