ever done this with a 3030 veral
« on: April 06, 2007, 07:35:37 AM »
Im kind of playing with a tc carbine in 3030 with a 16 inch barrel. I was sizing bullets  today to load for it and noticed a couple boxes of lbt lfngc 120s on the shelf. I got to thinking they might be fun loaded up to about 2600 fps out of that carbine. There was a box casted out of lynotype and one casted out of 50/50 ww/lyno on the shelf. Have you ever fooled with really pushing a bullet like that out of a 3030. Seems  to me it would make a heck of a load for larger varmits. Any idea on what would work for powder useage or charge weights to get me in the ballpark? Any other advise you could throw my way on this project would be appreciated.

  Reckon I may have!
The lightest bullets I've used were 120 gr, in a Marlin standard barrel, with velocities well over 2800 fps and excellent accuracy.

There are many 30-30 load listings for lightweight jacketed bullets.  Start with any of them that you have powder for, and I lean toward the ball powders used for 223.  You'll probably be able to exceed the manual listed charges quite a bit with complete safety.  I've long since forgotten the powders and charges I used with light bullets, but an example of stout 30-30 loads is 748 behind a 170 gr LFN producing 2450 fps.  Good safe pressures.  The charge I've forgotten, but it was well over jacketed loads, lube must be LBT, and bullet hardness at least 16 bhn to get that velocity with mild pressures.
