35 Rem?
« on: January 04, 2007, 11:42:39 AM »
Can the Contender handle the 35 Rem?  I cannot access the TC catalog on the web for some reason.

Great deer round. Used it for many years in NY. Hornady 180 gr Single Shot Pistol Bullet worked great for me both in accuracy and performance on whitetails. 2" groups at 100 yds. were norm. Traded it in for Encore and now realize it was a big mistake. Should have kept it and got Encore as well. Oh well. Now looking for used one.

Certainly!! I use mine with 200 grain cast bullets ,a 4x scope and a few prayers to get sub 2" groups at 100 yards!

Great, thanks guys.  How was the recoil with that round.

I just picked up my 357 Max barrel today, it's a used one for $180, it has some marks on the sides like it was hitting the receiver, but other than that it looks good.  A 10" blued barrel.  I can see some build up in the chamber as though 357Mag ammo has been shot, but it didn't look like it was cut, more like carbon build up.

Did I do OK?

How would the recoil from the Max and 35 Rem compare to my 4" barreled Ruger 357Mag with full power loads?

I find it to be stout, but not punishing.  I suppose after 30-40 rounds of 200gr stuff, you might start flinching.  As far as comparing it to a 4" .357 mag, there really is no way to compare the two.  The recoil of a contender is so much different than a revolver that I cannot compare the two.  It's sort of like comparing a Single action to an auto pistol.  The .35 rem screams, spits a HUGE fireball and kicks solidly.  I have a Pachmayr grip on my gun and it seems to soak up a fair amount of the kick.

If you want to tinker, try a 357 Herrett. It's a wildcat and stock barrels were available at one time. I shoot a 180gr .358 cal. bullett at a crono 2150 fps out of a 14" barrel. I believe the Herrett is more accurate in the contender. Below is a 10 shot group at 100yrds off sand bags. The target is a 1" white on a 2" black.  I use it on elk. DonL

handi, The good thing about the 10" barrel is it is USUALLY easier to shoot off hand than the 14". You do not have to shoot 200 grain bullets in that gun! Lighter ones work fine for varmints and paper. After you get used to it let us know if you think you did good!

Nase02, you might think about having your max barrel rechambered to 35Rem. I had a LOT of problems with my 1st 35 rem barrel.I had it rechambered to 358JDJ .It took me years to get the nerve to try another one. Luckily ,this one is great

I often carry my .35 Rem Contender with 14" barrel.  Recoil is heavy.  When sighting in the scope on the bench, I cheated and put the carbine stock on it till sight-in was done.  I load 180, 200, and 225gr bullets.  Have killed one Black Bear with it.

It's not a TC guys but I am having one of my .357 Max barrels rechambered to a .35 Remington right now. It is a H&R Handi and for many years my old Marlin 336 in .35 Rem was my favorite Maine and Northeast deer gun. I stilll like the caliber and think it is a fantastic deer and black bear round but am shooting mostly single shots now....<><.... :)

I've shot my brotherinlaw's 35 Contender a lot and while the recoil is stout, it's not punishing. His has the factory grip that's got the rubber insert in the back. Just don't make the mistake I made the last time I shot it. We were shooting off of sandbags. Somehow my pinky finger slipped down under the grip end and when that thing went off,I thought I'd shot off my finger. I'm here to tell ya that it'll get your attention pretty fast! You don't do it twice in a row!
His 35 will shoot a ragged hole at 100 yds with his handloads. He's killed 5 deer with it and a buddy of his has killed 4 with it. I believe he has a 4x Leupold on it.

Yea, I know that feeling, kinda like when I sent a 400gr pill downrange at 2,000 plus from my Buffalo Classic, with no extra weight in the stock :o

Handi, SINCE this is a 10" barrel. it MAY be better to leave it alone and shoot it as is. The MAX isn't that far below the 35Rem in a 10". The 35 herret WAS designed with the 10" barrel in mind! The down side of the herret is the case forming work. The loads in Hornady's 4th edition shows CONTENDER loads for the 357max & 35herret. Their 35Rem loads are from an XP100.

I had a Super 14 in .35 Rem years ago. I thought the recoil was no where near as bad as the same pistol in 44 Rem Mag The 44 mag was so 'snappy' in recoil. The .35 Rem would leave me a bloody stub where my arm was attached to my shoulder is what I was told. I even bought factory 200 grain ammo just to see. Nope,,just an easy to handle recoil. In my opinion the 35 is an easy round to shoot out of a 14" T/C barrel. I had a Leupold 2x on mine and that barrel would group well into 1" at 100 yards. GREAT barrel~!

Sourdough,
I don't mean to be a busybody or sound critical in any way, but I would recommend that a person never again say in any public forum or in print that they put a carbine stock on a 14" barrel action for any length of time or for any reason, unless they are so licensed. My last word on the topic....

ken do you realize some of the people reading these posts are NOT living in the land of the FREE? We are lucky to have people from all over the world here. I'm NOT flaming you, just reminding all of us that OUR laws may not be applicable to every one here.

Sourdough's profile shows that he lives in the USA.   I'd not challenge the intent of Ken's post, but perhaps he might have limited his suggestion to US citizens......without Class III permits.   Boy, some of us sure can get picky..... ;)
