Lowrance H20 and traveling?
« on: March 29, 2007, 11:34:17 AM »
Anyone use their Ifind for traveling to various cities?
How much for the whole US road maps?

I know it works great for fishing.

Okay, I bought it.  Loaded up the MapCreate 7 on the computer and donwloaded maps to the H2O.

This is pretty much my first experience with a GPS and it worked pretty well I think.  Following the location on the GPS was easy.
But the MC7 didn't have much lake detail.
So another $100 for those maps.

No problem traveling in MN, but lost the satellites in IA and IL. >:(

Better work in the boat better than it did in the car!

A suggestion regarding your gps reception.  Your H2O has a port for an external antenna.  You can get a Gilsson antenna for around $20+a suction antenna mount for another $6+shipping.  From my experience it is a good investment.  I normally mount the antenna inside on a rear side window.  But it is not conflict with the vehicle code in many States to mount it on the windshield.  I have had good results mounting one low on the windshield just above the dash.

I believe your experience with reception parallels my experience with the Garmin 76C without an external antenna.

Security Note:  The theft of gps units from locked vehicles is on the rise.  Put the gps, antennas, and power cords out of sight.  Hide them when you are not in the vehicle.  When traveling I do not leave the gps in my vehicle when staying in a motel room at night.

What are your battery life experiences with the H2O?

Still on first set of AA batteries with playing in the house.
In the car, using the lighter adapter.
Gilsson antenna?? Their website only mentions Magellan and Garmin antennas and their about $100.
$20 where?
Found it on GPSgeek.com

"H2Oc is a 16 parallel channel GPS+WAAS+EGNOS; external active or passive
antennas optional.
The iFINDER H2OC can use the passive FA-8 antenna or the active
RAA-3 antenna.
The active antenna offers a further performance boost
by amplifying the satellite signals it receives."

I missed that you have the H20C model.

From what I can determind from phone calls gpsgeek.com  is Gilsson on e-bay.  And another front for Gilsson is www.navsphere.com

When I talked to Gilsson on the phone it was like the person was wearing a Gilsson Hat, a navsphere Hat, and a Gilsoon Hat.  The bottom lines was I received a good product and good service at the right price.

I know little of MapCreate.  What is the learning curve?

"Learning Curve"

MapCreate worked pretty well.  Just select the info you want to save, then highlight using boxes or "travel corridors".

The only frustrating thing was trying to create a trail and save it to the Lawrance.  Several hours later I found out it dosen't work.  Grrr!
