Nice display of racks and nests there CaptOnion! What do you do to preserve the nests and ensure you don't get a bunch of wasps in your place during the warm months?

Last winter I found a perfect condition hornets' nest and got it out of the tree. I was the first anyone had seen in north central Tx. in years and years. One problem occured however. When I put it in my warm jeep, the hornets in it thought it was spring. No one at the time could tell me how to kill them without destroying the nest, and I eventually soaked it in gasoline and set it on fire.  :( I sure wish I had stayed with the problem longer and solved it. It would have looked good in my gun room.

My friend claims you can put a garbage bag around the nest and either spray the heck out of it with wasp spray or drop an insect bomb in the bag and tie it shut around whatever the nest is attached to. Doesn't sound too practical for some of the nests I have found... I'm hoping CaptOnion replies with his method... by the looks of his picture he has significant experience in the matter!  :)

Yea, someone told me to hang it in a plastic trash can and set off a bug bomb, but it was too late to try it, by the time I heard it.

I just plug the hole with klean-ex to take it home.Make sure you plug the hole before you cut it off the tree with brush clippers.Once at home I hang it in a tree in my yard.Unplug the entrance and within a day or two no more wasps. If the nest gets moved to a new location the wasps vacate the nest.

Keep nests dry and they last forever.Wasps wont use these nests again. They build new every year.

The nests make a nice decoration for camp or cottage.

Well you learn something new every day. I did not know that. I had heard they eat the nest and move it every year. What you call wasps we call hornets here in Tx.

When I find them in the winter, I put them in a bag with moth balls tie it shut and let it do the work. Now How about getting back to the subject at hand ?
I was also wondering what factory load works best for every one. I do reload but I'm giving it up.  I have tried ww powerpoints, Remington Corelocks and some federal vital shocks all 100 grn. What works best for you ? They all shoot good in my rifle. ;D

I've got a Remington 7400 in 30-06 that I've used for the past 7 years, on and off.  Started out as a synthetic stock with a 22" barrel.  Ended up with a 20" barrel, had it parkerized, and it's got a Bell & Carlson stock on it now.  Handles well, takes hard knocks, and kills deer.  It's a bit finicky though.  Some loads shoot 1" or so consistently, others shoot 2" or more.  Best groups have been with Hornady 150 SST's,  but I'm still undecided on whether I like the fast expansion.  I plan on trying some Interbonds later this spring.  The old Winchester 180 grain Failsafes also shoot about 1", but they are hard to find and expensive too.  I've got ten left that I've saving to use on the ugliest boar I can find, when I decide to go???  Everything else is hit or miss.  None of the  Remington loads shoot under 2", neither will any of the Federal Fusions.  I want to try the Winchester Accu-bonds, that shot awesome (as in 10 shots in less than an inch) in an old Remington 700 I used to have.  Used to have, cause I let a buddy use it, and he still can't explain how it got ran over by a tractor!!!  Now I don't let my friends borrow anything that I really like......

I fired 3 shots from an M1A one season over 2 days.  I took home 3 deer.

My complaint with that particular kind of rifle is that when it's cocked the firing pin can slide back and forth if you move the rifle from muzzle down to muzzle up and it makes a click when this happens.  I don't think it's very loud, but it sounds very loud when you are wearing electronic muffs.

Why did I shoot all my deer that season with that rifle?  Because the bolt gun I brought along had a nice wood stock and it rained off and on the whole weekend.  I would rather get the parkerized plastic stocked rifle wet than the nice wood stocked one.

After many years of using bolt actions they have been replaced with the new Russian Izhmash Saiga in 308win.  Its an AK47 in a sporter wrapper that is more reliable and dependable than anything on the planet with its battle proven design. The russians at izhmash focused on making it more accurate than its ak brothers are too.  It has a chrome lined bore and chamber too and it can be taken down in less than a minute to be completely cleaned every part is accessable to clean and lube.  This top quallity manufactured russian izhmash saiga semi auto rifle is under $400 too.  The saiga in 223 is another fine rifle too.  I picked performance over looks.  I owned a remington auto in 30-06 once and its no match to the saiga.  It can shoot 1 1/2" groups using surplus south african 308 ball ammo with iron sites at 100yds. and it spits out the 308 round faster than anythjing i have ever seen too.  All I can add too is AK47's don't jam.

There's a new kid on the block and its called SAIGA!!!!!

Nope i'm retired and enjoying my hobbies and when i see a great quality gun being offered at an offordable price and its unmatched in todays modern gun market I just want to pass the word on. Years ago i had no one to really guide me on what to buy or whats the hot deals.  I had one co worker who had his ff01 and he told me about this new rifle that just hit our shores from China and i had to have one.(SKS)  He was right about that. That was life before the internet and the information highway that we had today.   Using it to the fullest we can surely get some great deals and its a win/win situation for everyone too.

My very first sheetmetal stammped gun was a Cetme which is ok but i'm not really fond of it.  I stayed away from the ak47 style guns for many years.  Then i seen the saiga sporter in 308win with a 16" barrel and purchased it for $307 OTD.  We were on the way to go hunting in the north country so i put it in the car too.  We and the boys from the north hammered the saiga and everyone liked it.  I liked it so much i purchased a saiga in 223 for $269 when i got home.  I was never fond of the 223 round mainly because of the high over priced rifles that shoot this round.  But the affordable russian izhmash saiga in 223 is an awesome gun too.

We must remember too the modern hunting rifles aren't mean't to be shot and used like the military rifles are mean't to be used.  A modern hunting rifle is sighted in and taken hunting once or twice a year then stored for most of its life.  Its not used that much. This puts the russian izhmash saiga and other surplus military rifles in another class of there own.  You can take the russian izhmash saiga out and hammer it one day plinking for many rounds and out the next day for hunting without the worry of ever wearing it out. Because of its chromed lined chamber and bore its a dual role gun.  So were really getting double our money's worth with this dual role gun.

My new semi I plan on using as a deer rifle is an AR-15 in 6.8 SPC.  I will use it effectively in the DNR designated "herd control" areas. I hope Jim Zumbro is reading this.

BigBill,
you have a .308 Saiga, and you like it?  What is accuracy like?  I have wanted one but never knew anyone who had one to comment on.  So, do you recommend the .308 only or have you heard the 762x39 is good too.  Are they heavy?  I like a light rifle cuz I walk alot.
Thanks
