Older 30-30 barrel for TC
« on: April 23, 2007, 11:56:51 AM »
I have one of the older 6 land 30-30 barrels, 14 inch.  I have heard that it has a slower twist than the new barrels. What is the twist of this old barrel? What are the disadvantages/advantages of its slower twist and 6 lands compared to a modern barrel?

tks

The older 6 Land & Groove .30 Caliber Contender Barrels have a 1 in 14" Twist as opposed to the newer 8 Land & Groove .30 Caliber Contender Barrels that have a 1 in 10" Twist.

Some people claim that the older 6 Land & Groove .30 Caliber Contender Barrels with the 1 in 14" Twist can be pushed to higher velocities without higher pressures. Other authorities claim that the slower twist will cause the bullets to expand slower due to the less RPM's the bullets are rotating at due to the slower twist.

In shooting 14" .30-30 Winchesters with both style rifling and twists I have not seen a great difference in velocity or accuracy with the same loads fired in each of these types of barrels. When a gun dealer buddy of mine was working up a load that he ultimately offered as a Commercial Reload so to speak I did all the accuracy testing and chronographing work for him. I tested his ammo in over a half dozen 14" .30-30 Winchester Barrels and for the most part the average velocity was 2400 FPS with a 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip Bullet (if I remember right the fastest barrel averaged 2410 FPS and the slowests barrel averaged 2375 FPS) with most barrels capable of putting 5 of that ammo into a 1" group at 100 yards from the bench.
