Reviving my love of archery, looking for info/advice
« on: December 22, 2006, 01:55:41 AM »
Years ago I worked at a Boy Scout summer camp as an Archery merit badge counselor, not because I was experienced but because they needed someone to help.  My camp director was a former Olympic archer and made sure we had good equipment, good recurves rather than the fiberglass "crowbars" (as he called them) other camps were using.  I did this for two summers in a row and got pretty good at shooting without sights.  It's been years since I've shot consistently and I want to get ready for the archery deer season next year so I need some equipment help.  What I currently have is a 44# Browning Cobra (50"AMO??-someone will need to tell me what that means) with a flipper rest and some old Easton 2216 (?) arrows.  The bow shoots well but it is a bit loud.  Any suggestions on arrows, broadheads, new strings, rests - anything, would be appreciated.

The 50"AMO is your guide to string selection. You can buy a 50"AMO string that will probably be be 4" under 50. I would buy a 47" string and twist it down to get your brace height. Get a bow square and attach a nock locator around 1/2" above perpendicular to the string. Adjust it up or down until you get it shooting straight.

Your bow is most likely loud because the brace height is wrong. Twist or untwist your string until you find a spot it works well. Measure brace height from the string to the point of the handle where the web of your hand rests. I would guess a brace height around 7" give or take 3/4"

Nothing wrong with 2016s thats what I use on my 45lb recurve. They probably need to be refletched - I would use feathers.

You may want to get rid of the flipper and shoot off the shelf thats up to you.

A 50" bow is rather short. Unless you are short or the bow is extremely well built it will probably stack quite a bit.

You can go to the  easton archery web site and download their tuning guide. It will be helpful.

jpuke, As far as quieting your bow, one can't really go into details for each individual bow as they all quite different, in respect to where the noise is generated. Yes, I would "start" with the brace height. For a better than average understanding of bow noise, pick yourself up the FEB/MAR 2007 issue of Traditional Bowhunter magazine. There are two articles in there that pertain strictly to bow/string/accs. noise, and how to identify it and try and to correct it. Hope this helps, CRASH87

Once you get your brace height to where the bow is shooting relatively quietly, then add some beaver balls to the string.  Take off the flipper and work on shooting off the shelf, as suggested above.  I place a small piece of rawhide string on the shelf and up the window about 1", then I cover with a thin piece of leather for the side plate, and use a slightly thicker piece of leather on the shelf.  The 'ridge' under the shelf cover and the side plate make for a very small surface to come in contact with the arrow.  You could use a 'rug' of some sort on the shelf.

If the bow still makes too much noise, you can then try going to heavier arrows.

With the above set ups, my bows all shoot very quietly (recurves, long bows, and self bows).

Best of luck, and welcome back!  Arch
