Question for the handi brains
« on: April 29, 2007, 09:15:46 AM »
I was just sitting here thinking about how I like older rounds better than the new rounds I got to thinking about one I have always been interested in. I am sure it has been asked before I am sorry for asking again but would the 300 Savage be doable in the handi and what barrel would be best to be made in to one? I also have just one more question what barrel and around what price would it cost to do a 35 Remington? Thanks in advance for any and all replys.

Did some looking at the 300 , none of the factory 308 bore barrels will work for a re-chamber so your looking at a total re-work , bore and chamber , thats going to run around $300 or up + Donor barrel  .

As for the 35 Rem , you can get that done for around $100 to $150 plus the cost of the barrel , depending on who does the work .

35 Rem from the 357 is a piece of cake, shoots well too, Wayne York did mine for me, is doing one for MSP right now. ;) You'd have to modifiy the underlug for a rimless case, but that's not hard to do at all.  :)

I have received mine back from Wayne York and it looks and fits great. I have not had a chance to
shoot it yet but I am sure it will work great if Wayne did it, he is top shelf all the way....<><....:)

Not sure I consider myself a Handi brain, but the 30-30 is about as close as you can come to the 300 Savage.  Not in case size, but in performance.  I don't know the ballistics of the 300 but the 30-30 in a Handi ought to be close, besides the 30-30 is an oldie too ;D.

As for the 357 conversion, if it were me, I'd go with the 356 Win, or 358, depending on whether or not you want a rimmed round.

As for other oldies, so far I'm getting really impressed with my 38-55.  Bore and chamber seem right on.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Thanks fellows I hope one day there will be a 35Rem in the gun cabinet. handirifle I have a 30-30 handi that I love in fact I tell everyone that this is my baby. It was the only rifle I hunted with this past season. I also have a 45-70 that I have yet to shot and I can see a 22 hornet down the road. There is just something old those old rounds that I seem to be drawn to. That is why I just thinking out loud at the 300 Savage in the handi but that sounds like alot work involed in that one.

See the link in the FAQs "Rimmed to rimless Conversion" under the pics of underlugs near the bottom of the page.

The .300 Sav. is not comparable to the .30-30.
It is generaly regarded as the proto-type for the .308.
i.e. the crtg. that they started with when they were developing the new round for military self loaders. :)

could a 357 barrel be reamed out to 358 win ?  I have some 358 win  silver tips and they look like a pretty impressive round.

Yup, or 35 Whelen, of the 2, I'd go for the Whelen, the only advantage the 358 has is it's great in a short action, a moot point in a Handi. ;) You could also go to 35 Remington if you had a mind to!! ;D

Thanks Quick.  the old 358 just seems to appeal to me, kind of like the 45-70 does.
