GRIPS
« on: April 13, 2007, 11:22:39 PM »
Recently, I have had a conversation with a friend about grips for pistols.
Grips are one thing that almost anyone can add to a pistol which can enhance the looks of it.
Some, however; while being pretty are not as functional as they need too be and some, while functional, are overly aggressive to the hand.
I have Aluma grips  on one STI and they are pretty aggressive, over a period of a long session.
My friend has some pretty stag grips on one of his but he claims that they can become slick.
My favorite are Micarta and they can be pretty, also.
This new Colt that is in the works has some Ivory handles and I like them though I have not shot it a great deal.
I am thinking that I am going too get a set of Micarta grips from Yost/Bonitz after I have all the work completed on the Colt.
Anybody have suggestions.
Blessings

Good morning Mr.L,

For what it's worth, I've always liked Herrett skip checks.  I think the pattern is quite attractive.  Lately, I've been putting Chip McCormack thin line grips on my carry colts as they reduce the thickness of the butt significantly.  Though...the checkering looks pressed to my eye, but I'm sure speigel or someone has a handmade alternative.

Ask this question to 100 shooters and get 100 totally different answers. I personally like the Herrett's Jordan Troopers for heavy recoiling handguns but, they are usually too large for double action shooting, at least for me? Bill Jordan had GIANT hands.
Also, I understand the need to ask.

Mr. Layton,

I would highly recommend you check out this website.  It was recommended by Broomrider on a different post.  Well I have tried a couple of sets.  Quality is exceptional and she offers a variety of checkering options.  It's worth a look.  Just my 2 cents.

Some time ago I found a pair made from aged elk antler. Even on a hot day they don't seem to get slick. Afraid I have no idea who made them or I would have a second pair.

There's a guy on the Ruger forum and the S&W forums that makes grips out of Elk. He goes by "The Executioner" and has a website. You can contact him at:   patrickgrashorn1874@msn.com

I got a set of Elk Stag and moose grips made for my Rugers. He also makes them for a 1911. Very nice work.  ;D

I have always been partial to the Pachmayer (did I spell that right?) Gripper or Decelerator grips. They are a little thinner than most rubber grips and much easier to hold on to.
