Just picked up my Handi in 45-70
« on: March 18, 2007, 09:39:10 AM »
Hi all, I just got back from getting my newest Handi. I fired about 12 rnds through it, and WOW this thing kicks. I was shooting my own handloads of 62 gr of H-335 behind a Hornady 300 gr. JHP. It is a very accurate gun but this load proved to be a bit stiff on my shoulder. I have a question for the knowing here. Can these guns be converted from having a extractor to a ejector? Mine has an extractor and while it's nice for the fact that I will not loose any brass, it will be a pain in trying to get off another shot in a timely fassion.

Thanks for the help

Nick :)

With the 45/70 300gr.JHP why do you need a second shot? ;DDave

I know....Iknow.... but just in case I would need another shot. I actually had to do this on a deer a couple of years ago. I missed, and had to hurry up and get another round off. I must note that this was with a H&R Ultra Slug gun, and it does have the ejector, which made it possible for me to get that deer.

Thanks
Nick

Welcome aboard , glad you could shoot the new toy , as far as extractor to ejector , i don't think it is posable yet , i know some are toying with the idea but i have not heard of it being done yet .

For everyday plunking i use a 405 cast bullet over 12gr of Unique , very mild recoil almost to the point of being kid friendly . try it you may like it .  ;)

you'll get used to a little kick, heck you may even get to enjoy it .   As far as the extractor to ejector conversion , Maybe Quick can steer you in the right direction. But with a little practice ,trying to get off a quick second shot, I bet you will be suprised how fast you can make it happen.          Good shooting , and you will love the 45-70.

Thanks for the replys fellas. I really do like this gun, I can hardly wait to mount my scope to it. Stimpy, thanks for the light load, I will definitly be loading some of those up. I just happened to pick up a box of that gr bullet at Gander Mtn. How did you come across that light load? I don't really have a problem with the extractor, I was just sort of thinking outloud. It would be nice though to have that piece of brass jump out of the chamber.

Thanks again for the welcome.

I don't think that conversion is practical. I'm sure some of the very talented folks around here could figure out a way to do it but the easy way would be to trade it with someone in the classifieds that has an ejector barrel that wants an extractor barrel instead.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

I got the load from one of the guys here at GBO ( thanks Shaner ) we were shooting one day and he said try these , i like the load so well that i buy the 405s , 250 at a time sometimes 500 .  ;D

Another bullet that i like real well is the Beartooths Jr Piledriver in 425gr with a heavy load of H4895

Thanks for the load reference guys. I will be mounting my scope on it today and will be testing some loads to see if the scope will hit my eye or not. I hope it doesn't. My buddy thinks I'm nuts as he thinks this gun is way to light for a 45-70. I actually like the fact that it doesn't weigh a lot.

Fitting a Limb Saver or magnum Pachmayer recoil pad will help a great deal and make shooting it much more enjoyable.....wither shooting magnum loads...or your light loaded shells.Something for you to consider at some point in time...especially before starting any heavy load development. If and when you get ready for that..let me know...I have several loads that work well with the Handi...and are very accurate.

I shot it today with the Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 on it with no problems at all. It only took 5 shots at 50 yrds to get it on zero. I will now move things out to 100 yrds and work up from there. The loads I was shooting today were mild, they consisted of Starline brass CCI 200 Primer, 60 gr of H4895 behind a Hornady 300 gr JHP.

Mac, I would love to read your loads you have worked up.

I'll try and get some pics. posted in the next day or two.

Thanks for for listening ( reading ) to me ramble, I'm just like my son when he gets a new toy.

My standard Micro Groove Marlin load is 13.5 - 13.6 grains of Unique for 405 grain bullet at about 1150 fps .  Very pleasant to shoot .

Hey Nick...whats the length of your barrel? My 45/70 isn't here yet but if we have the same barrel length AND mine is an ejector, I'll swap ya.....

Hi Ken, Thanks for the offer. but the extractor seems to be growing on me. I think I'll keep it.

Thanks

It should grow on ya....I'm tired of picking my brass up off the ground! These are single shot rifles...
