varmint grenades
« on: April 24, 2007, 04:34:58 PM »
Anybody work up any loads for these 36gr .223 bullets yet ? If not where do you think I should start the powders I have are all IMR 3031,4198 and4350.
not sure yet which gun will shoot them best but my best guess would be that the 15" 1-12 encore may be better than the 1-9 twist on the 24"bull bbl NEF thanks Kurt

Kurt, email or call Ty Harring at Barnes, he'll give you any data he has for it. Can't see why in the world a fella would contact Sierra for data on a Barnes bullet!!

I am going to contact barnes but based on what has been posted here anybody see anything wrong with starting with 22gr IMR4198 36gr bullet wsr primer or 25gr IMR3031 36gr bullet wsr primer. I am using the winchester primers because small rifle primers are very scarse around here and I was able to secure 1000 of them plus the IMR powder I got with all the used equiptment I bought and have about 8# of IMR4350,4198,3031,and I think the other is 4064 which until I use it up will make for some very cheap reloading at the price I paid for every thing. Also I think I will mostly have to shoot these 36gr out of my short 223 encore with the 1-12 twist but what could I do to maybe make them shoot well out of the new 1-9 on my ultra? thanks Kurt

Kurt

If you go by the data for the 40gr bullets off the Hodgdon web site you may want to back off 1gr. for starters , as the load you list is close to max per them.

Don't knock it til ya try it. The bulletsmiths at Sierra are a wealth of info on "anybodys" bullet. They have tried every concievable combination of anything I have ever ask them about. There are no finer groups of people to work with for ballistic information.

FYI on the varmint grenade. There a guy on another forum who didn't even finish his first box of 100 because of accuracy issues. He sent them to me for testing in my .221. I am not that optomistic as I am pretty confident that he gave them a good trial.
