.410 Non tox loads...

 I have always wanted one. It was the first gun i can remember having my eye on at the local Coast to Coast store. I was about 8 years old. So 23 years later, I just purchased a Mossberg .410 pump for some good time goose shooting at close range. We often shoot geese at 10-20 feet over decoys. A 12 ga. just mangles them at those ranges. So I thought it would be something to try.
I looked into non tox shot and noticed the only thing avaiable was Bismuth...Which is 1.89 per shot. How would a fella go about working up a reload of say steel or hevi shot for this? I have access to the MEC Jr. and the components. But my question is where would I find the data and If I had to go about it on my own where would I start? Thanks

I think hodgons shot shell loading manual has some data for non tox shot for 410.

also you can contact the shot makers and give them a list of your components and they may give you a good load and point you in the right direction

Either bismuth or heavy shot will cost you $1.25-$1.50 per oz as a component. Bismuth can be used with "standard" wads but I'm not sure heavy shot or steel can be. If wads are avaiable they wiil likely drive the cost up. Bismuth may be your best option for producing the most effectve load for a reasonable cost.
