Browning Mnt Gun
« on: April 16, 2007, 05:16:30 PM »
Are these any good? There is one at my local gun shop that came from an estate sale. It is browned in color outside has minor surface rust. Bore from what I can tell with a bore light is in great shape. Most likely a 1 in 66 twist.Looks as if it has German Silver on nose cap and where barrel pins are located on sides of stock. It even has the box with no manual. I love the buckhorn rear sights. Asking price is 400.00.

I've never owned one but have handled a few.  I like the way they feel.  They are highly regarded among the muzzleloading fraternity.

It is a 50 cal Has minor rust all over the rifle. I know some TLC will make a difference in this rifle.Like I said the bore is in darn good condition. This rifle has the box but no manual with it. I know it hasn't been fired. Again asking price is 400.00 plus the gov.

Wait a dang minute!  Buying a rifle is not just a go get it type thing.  There are customs and different traditions that have to be honored prior to buying.  Such as the "let the other fella check on it for ya" custom.

Now just send an e-mail to nice old Crow-Feather and tell him the location and phone number of the store holdin that rifle gun, and I will personally check it out for ya - even if I have to have it mailed ta my house in order to do it.

Course once it gets ta my house, I'll probably save ya from a bad deal an just keep the thing instead of allowin you ta waste yer money............nice guy that I am.  Will be waitin ta hear from ya

Were it me, I would take a range rod & some white patches & some Ballistol & swab the bore real good with it, then run a couple of dry patches down it & check it out good. Oil in a bore or grease will appear to show shiney & etc. and it still could be pitted.   I know you say it is good, but appearances can be deceiving with a light.  Reason I say that is if the outside is rusted all over lightly, chances are the bore has had the same care.  I have look at ALLOT of them & thought the bore looked decent until I swabed it good & found out otherwise.

I found 2 of them up in Ohio a couple of years ago & man they looked Great on the outside & upon bore inspection, found them full of cruds, shot & never cleaned & a total wreck inside.  However, the shop owner assured me that ALL  ML's were that way & it was "normal" as  ML's just get that way because of shooting BP in them..........  ::)

As for the price, if the bore is good Buy It and quit haggling with the guy as the first other guy that sees it for that price will take it home.

If ya get it, take some Ballistol & some 600 or 1000 wet/dry paper & wet the paper with the Ballistol & carefully rub the flats & that surface rust will come right off. The reason I was use the paper is because you can cut it into 1" squares & fold them in half & carefully rub it & not rub the brown off the edges of the flats.  If ya use steel wool you will rub the browning off the edges.

But that is a real good price if it is in good condition.   ;)
