760...Should I buy it?
« on: May 29, 2007, 03:46:47 PM »
One of the local gun dealers has a Model 760 that looks pretty good for $350.  Stock is nearly perfect, bore looks good, no pitting on the steel. Has a few scrapes on the bluing.  Should I take a chance on it?

I think the 760 is a fine rifle.  I think you will have to decide if the scrapes are enough of a problem to keep you from buying it.  If you want a pump rifle, it is pretty much the only game in town.  (The newer 7600 is practically the same rifle.)

Just curious,  What caliber is that 760?  $350 is not a bad price if the gun, less those scratches., is pretty clean.

It's a 30-06.  I went back to the gun shop and bought it.  It has a 4X scope with a strip of tape wrapped around its tube, right against the barrel-end scope ring. Made me wonder if the scope was shifting.  I have a 2X-7X scope I want to mount to it, and when I removed the 4X scope I found that every fastener was only a little more than finger tight.  I'll be taking it to the range tomorrow to try it out.

Happy I bought it.  Got the scope mounted and sighted in.  Tried 125gr, 150gr, and 165gr. The 165gr Winchester gave me three groups (3-shot groups at 100 yd) of 1-5/6", 1-3/8", and 1-3/8". Was shooting off a bench.
