Is it worth messing with?
« on: June 23, 2007, 05:24:37 PM »
I found an 8" 22 marked Monson on the frame.  It has seen many a mile.  I bet I could get it for 175.00 out the door.  It looks like the blueing is almost completely worn off.

Should I forget about it?  I didn't want to show any interest in case I wanted to go back.

Thanks,

Crabo

Not sure how one entirely wears the finish off a gun that couldn't be any older than a few decades. It would be helpful to get a born-on date for it, that may be difficult. It is getting very difficult to get parts for the early models, as I am learning with my Model 12.

Without a hands-on inspection, it would be hard to gauge. Sounds to me like it was abused in unusual ways. I would really give it the once-over. It could be that it just needs a refinishing and it is mechanically sound. However, I think the more likely scenario is that it went to rust and someone attempted to correct it.

Bring a mini-Maglight.

Based on your description, I would offer $50 and be promptly thrown out of the shop.

I would offer $100, but I would be afraid they might take me up on the offer.  If the finish is the only thing wrong with it, I would give $100.  If you don't know how to check out a used revolve very closely, I would pass on it.
