Marlin 25mn re-barrel
« on: April 27, 2007, 06:18:26 AM »
Just found a good deal on a Marlin 25mn, 22 wmr. Could this rifle be re-barreled to 17 hmr?

I am not familiar with the 25mn but the any 22 mag rifle should be alterable to the 17HMR as its the same round with just a neck and a different bore. I would bet though that it would be cheaper to simply sell or trade the rifle off for a 17HMR factory built. You'd need a barrel and a good smith to machine, install and chamber, not a low dollar enterprise.

I have seen it done, it probably wont be cheap unless you have machining skills yourself and can cut the shank of the barrel to the right size.  Barrels for re-cut work with just the shank being re-cut, I think that it's your best source for a new barrel.  Getting a factory marlin .17 barrel would not be easy or cost effective. A new marlin 17 is ony about 180-200 about the same as a new barrel.
Look at www.rimfirecentral.com for more info.

Thanks for the advice. I decided to hold off and buy a factory 17hmr anyway.
