Can I use Rem 1 1/2 primers for the .357 Magnum?
« on: September 10, 2007, 02:52:42 AM »
I have a thousand Remington #1 1/2 primers.  I intended to use them for a .357 Magnum, but I have conflicting information about which primers to use.  I initially found that I needed small pistol primers, then I found in some other manuals that I needed to use magnum small pistol primers.  The load variations between the data is minimal.  Let me know your experiences or if I should try to return the unopened 1,000 brick of primers.  I intend to load for plinking and heavy hunting loads, using Blue Dot and Unique for light loads, H110 or AA #9 for heavy loads.  Thanks for the help.

I think you will find that the 1 1/2 will work OK with every thing except the H110. They usually recommend magnum primers for that powder. I would buy a few boxes of 100 of Rem 5 1/2 or another brand for that purpose.

The only one that i would worry about would be the H110 , all the others will work ok with standard primers . H110 / Win 296 seem to need the extra fire of a Mag primer while the rest will light just fine .

Like the others said, the standard primers will work fine for light to medium loads with powders that ignite easily. With that said though, I've always had more consistent velocity spreads, as well as tighter groups using magnum primers(CCI 550's or nothing with me) even with powders like Unique, etc.
