Thinking of getting a rifle built by Montana Rifleman.
Has anyone had experiencewith them?
Thanks.

I don't have any personal experience with them, but some of the Gunmaker's Guild gunsmith's (Jack Belk and Chic Worthing) that post over at Accurate Reloading are really taken with them.  They seem to be a cross between the 98 Mauser and Pre-64 Winchester, though cast like the Ruger M77's.  I haven't heard anything but praise from the people that have them or have seen them.

If I were going to be making a bolt action rifle on a new action, I'd go with one in a heartbeat.

For what it's worth,

YJ

I have also heard good things about them as I too was interested in getting a barreled action in .35 Whelen.  I have yet to hear anything bad about them.  Price for the stainless barreled action was (if I remember correctly) about $800.

I don't know what the prices are right now, but about 6 months ago, during their first run, they were offering standard length actions for $350.  I thought they bumped it up to around $465 now, but could be mistaken.

I haven't checked to see what the barreled actions are going for.

hans:  I have to agree with Gary Lamberth - I too have a Montana Rifleman 444 Marlin barrel, but on my winchester 94 Big Bore and, I love it.  I feel it is a quality barrel and well made.  In all my conversations with the Montana Rifleman staff I was impressed with their knowledge and sincerity.  My Winnie is a beauty.

For Mr. Lamberth:  talk to a fellow named Harpy - he makes some gorgeous jacketed bullets for the 444, all the way to 410 grains.  From your Model 48, if your barrel is the same length as the 23" original, you should be able to take anything on this continent with some of his loads.  In addition, there are a number of other folks on these forums (check the lever action forum) who load for the 444.  BTW, the first 98 I ever saw chambered for the 444 was in the Bronx, in 1968.  A gunsmith named  'Doc Barth' put it together and used a wormwood design on the stock.  It too was a beauty.

Hope this helps.  Mikey.
