« on: May 06, 2007, 11:22:43 PM »
take a close look at the little 45 auto rim and you will see what ive preached about for years about midrange bullets at around 1000 fps. They will sure do alot of killing.

That's impressive, to say the least!!  ;) Here's some more of his penetration tests, the venerable 45-70 shows good for itself too!!

Mr. Smale, the 44 mag punch sure is impressive. How much different would it be in your opinion at handgun velocities?

punch bullets are a little different proposition then lead. If it was lead id say probably none but the punch bullets will take more velocity without deforming then any alloy of lead will and usually do a little better at rifle velocitys. But ill tell you from my experience is that theres very little a 44 punch bullet out of a handgun wont shoot through!

I was thinking that way, but I wanted to be sure. I understand as you suggest here that the higher vel. does not deform this bullet, thereby allowing more penetration, but I figured the penetration would be very good at handgun speed & easily penetrate anything I would shoot with it. Just as some new technology rifle bullets are raising a given cartridge's performance level a notch or two, the same is happening with handgun bullets, but sometimes in a different way. I am not implying that a bigger round like the 480/475 with a big bullet would not have an edge, because it still would, but sometimes the Punch or some LBT designs are making the 44 more plausible at times.

I personaly think that the punch bullets up a caliber in effectiveness if thats possible. They will almost give you 475 performance out of your 44 and what they do in the big guns is ammazing!. The absoulte only downfall to them is price. Its an expensive proposition even working up loads with them. A guy could though buck up and work up a load and buy a 100 of them load them up and remember your sight settings and be set for hunting the rest of your life. I know that if i ever get the oportunity to hunt something big and bitey or fullfill my dream of going to africa with a handgun, punch bullets will be going along. There in a class of there own when it comes to handgun projectiles.
