In your opinion--What finishes display/show off/reveal engraving to its best advantage?

A friend has a 1911 that was engraved in Japan shortly after WWII, according to his uncle who gave him the gun, it was blued with a cyanide bluing which is almost black.  It has Ivory grips, with a set of Captains bars inlayed on one side, and pilots wings on the other.

The gun is in remarkably good shape for its age, and the light dances off the engraving like it bounces off a diamond.  I have two engraved, a model 10 Smith Stainless, and a nickle PPK, neither are half are pretty as the 1911.

I always liked when they took a good dark bluing, did an engraving, and then did a white inlay in the engraving, makes a really good contrast.

A little hep here.
It is a  position of discombobulation I find myownself in here.
The type of finish must not fill in the light engraving.
I have no experience with making this final decision. I have found a source for old Cabona bluing. i like the thought of some new finishes that offer better protection and I really like hard chrome.
The fear is that these new finishes or the hard chrome or the nickle will fill the engraving.
Anyone have ANY experience with the results of these finishes and/or opinion of these fears.
I would too keep the show of the engraving too protection.
