scope on a savage 340?
« on: May 12, 2007, 02:45:44 AM »
My 12 year old daughter is going to be deer hunting with a old Savage 340 this year. It has a Weaver sidemount scope rings & a 4X32 Weaver scope. I remember these scopes had a bad reputation when I was a teen for fogging. I removed it & was going to mount a Tasco 3X9X40 in it's place to find out the slight bulge in the side of the Tasco won't fit in this antique mount. Has anyone modified any of these mounts to fit? Will it hurt it to do so?

Actually, I think the old Weavers are fine scopes, I even use a couple of the old "J" series 3/4" scopes with no problems. That mount, which is the ONLY mount for the 340, offers very little flexibility in scope position, it often is not possible to get  proper eye relief with some scopes. It may be possible to cut down the side rail a bit but if the old Weaver is clear and the eye relief is OK  I'd not worry about it.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I have an 840E (same gun, little different stock). I put a B-Suqare side mount on mine and have had a Simmons Aetec and now have a Barska 3-9x40 on it. No problems with the scope fitting in the mount and it lines up straight with the bore also. Here's a link.

Goodwrench,
I can't add anything to your scope mount question - I don't know anything about the Savage 340 mount.  I just can't pass up the opportunity though, to congratulate you on having a 12 year old daughter going deer hunting!  I only have daughters and my oldest liked to hunt and fish.  Her first deer (got it with a 30-30 on a snowy Wisconsin day) is a fond life-long memory - at least for the old man.  Good luck and all the best to you and your daughter.  Sorry if I got off topic.  Couldn't help it. :) :)

Found at a local shop, Weaver still makes the same sidemount scope mounts, but the top section is different. Was able to purchace the new top for $25.  8)
Well, thanks again.
Yes, I'm excited about my daughter going deer hunting this year. She took the PA hunters safety course in April. Out of 60 questions, she got 2 wrong, they were muzzle loader part questions. I took the class & test with her too, lost my card a long time ago & thought it would be a good thing to have. I was really glad she was interested in what they had to teach & the old man learned a couple things too. LOL.
