XS Sight Systems
« on: April 24, 2007, 09:41:15 AM »
Hey yall. Its been a while since I last posted on here, cause I kinda got
discouraged when I couldnt figure out why my NEF Sportster's accuracy
was so off. I'm pretty sure something is still amiss with the standard sights
on the rifle But go figure. I got the idea of maybe installing some Ghost Ring
sights on mine, but will they fit on the Sportster? XS SS makes a Ghost Ring
set for the NEF Hand-Rifles, so I thought that maybe they would also fit on
the Sportster. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I just noticed that my front sight post is like that of the Centerfire Rifles. Looking
@ H&R's website, I notice that the Sportsters have the same front sight as does the
Marlin Model 60. But mine is identical to that of a Centerfire H&R. Could this be affecting
my accuracy? I mean the sight is pretty tall....and as I recall I was having a problem with
the rifle shooting low.

Any type sighting system that will mount on the handi rail will also work on the Sportster , they use the same one . as for the front site you may be on to something , if the site is too tall it will make the rifle shoot low .

Exactly my point....so I wonder if there is any chance that I could get the correct front sight
from H&R, being that they installed the wrong front sight? Also, would I have to
get a receiver mount base to install the Ghost Ring or could it be installed on the existing
receiver holes?

H&R is notorious for installing the wrong height front sights, it's been reported many times, that said, they are always happy to send the correct sight to fix their error. Give em a call and ask them to send the correct sight for it.

Another alternative is to just install the Williams WGRS peep sight($18 from H&R) which will double as a ghost ring without the aperture disk installed, or order one of their ghost ring apertures for it.

While you're working on the sights, you might consider adding a Firesight instead of the factory front sight.

10-4. One more thing though, can I just mount the peep sight on the existing receiver holes or do I have to mount a ramp on it? I mean, I can deal with the standard buckhorn sights, but not if they arent the rights ones for the rifle. Like I said, my Marlin Model 60 is DEAD ON out to at least 50 yards with standard buck-horn sights. I figured my Sportster could do that easily, but not if it dont have the correct front sight. Also, what size or type of wrench do I need for the front sight? It looks to be similar to an Allen wrench, but not exactly. Anyone know?

The front sights I have take a  5/64" allen wrench, I don't have a rimfire barrel with sights so I don't know what size it takes for sure. You can use the calculator on the Williams web site in the Peep sight link I posted earlier to determine front sight height. The WGRS mounts in the 2 rear scope base holes.

I've got an XS ghostring on my Handi 45-70. It screws directly onto the barrel. The standard handi front sights are not high enough and will have to be replaced (I put a williams firesight on mine) the front sight that comes with the XS set is unusable, it's a dovetail sight apparently for older model guns, it might fit a shorty ramp. The XS ghostrings are very expensive. If I had it to do over again I'd go with one of the williams peep sights that are available from H&R. For what it's worth...

Well, they still sent me the wrong front sight. I'll post 2 pictures proving that they sent the wrong one.

The front sight of this handi-rifle is what they sent me.

The front sight on this sportster is what I should have gotten.
If you'll notice, this is also the same front sight that the Marlin
Model 60 has.

So, tomorrow I'll have to make yet another phone call and try once again
to explain this to the CS peeps @ H&R. Do they not know their own
products or ?

They don't necessarily use the same sights they show in the pics, they've changed their sights numerous times over the years. If the sight fits and is the right height, it may be the only one that they'll send ya.

But the problem is that the sight is sitting to the right....the dang thing does not sit on the barrel straight.
Now I did check to make sure the hole in the barrel was drilled straight by putting the screw in by itself.
It was perfectly straight. For some odd reason the sight sits to the right on top of the barrel....go figure.

Ok, seeing that I may not be able to get the correct front sight, or one from the factory that will work, where
can I get another front sight from? I mean the sight has to accept a 5/64" allen screw, and I dont know
if that is all that common. Any recommendations or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If it uses a 6-48 threaded screw, you can install a Williams ramp and Firesight, see the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs and Help sticky.

That's the size of the socket head, the thread size is the critical issue, they've used at least two different threads, the 6-48 was being used recently, but they switched back to their proprietary sights which I believe are 3-56 or some such, I have one 45-70 barrel with that size screw in the front sight.

6-48 = #6 screw, 48th threads per inch or pitch. It's the same thread size as the scope mount holes. ;)

I am thoroughly disgusted and dissapointed with my NEF Sportster. I like the rifle, I really do, but it just will not shoot.
The front sight base sits to the right on the barrel, and I can not find any logical reason why it does
this. I had H&R send me a new front sight, and yet it still does the same thing. I took it out today
to try out the new front sight, and it shot EXTREMELY LOW and LEFT. I have never had any rifle
of mine shoot that badly. I am not trying to put it down, this has just been my experience. I bought
the rifle for an inexpensive plinker to keep around the house. I didnt know that I would be getting
a rifle that shoots so badly that I may as well throw rocks. And I didnt want to scope it, that was
the whole point. I want the open sights, but I dont know what the base problem is. I dont know
where I can find any other front sights to fit the Sportster either. Can anyone please suggest
something that I could do? I was thinking about sending it back to H&R, but I doubt that they would
correct it, as I feel it may be the way their rifles are made. I just dont know. Any replies would be
greatly appreciated.

Georgian, don't give up quite yet .Mine was also crooked, the contour of the sight base didn't match the contour of the barrel. I removed the sight, layed a piece of emery cloth lengthways on the barrel and "ground" the sight base to match the barrel. It took a while, I was very careful to keep the base flat onto the barrel and sanded until all of the black was gone. It fits tight and straight on the barrel now.
Good luck,

P.S. if you have a couple of front sights, use the tallest one.

This might seem like a dumb question. Are you making any adjustments to the rear sight? If you loosen the screw on top of the rear sight it will raise the impact of the bullet, if you loosen the small screw on the right side of the sight it will move the impact to the right. Move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to strike. The screws that you can see on the outside of the rear sight are adjustment screws. The screw that holds the sight to the barrel is underneath the rear sight ramp. Hope that helps.

There is no screw adjustment on my rear sight. It is the basic step up rear sight. I have tried adjusting that, but it does little to nothing for the bullet impact because of the front sight base. Can you give specific instructions on how to correct my problem with the sight base? I'd appreciate it.
