Ramps or wild onions?
« on: April 18, 2007, 09:17:37 AM »
I was treated to my first taste of ramp/potato soup and it was delicious.  I had never tasted or seen ramps before and someone told me they were also called wild onion.  We have what i thought were wild onions growing on our land and they are different.  The ramps have a broader leaf and what we have here look more like chives.  They have a top that looks like a very thin version of the onions in my garden.  I sure would appreciate more info on both of these.

Wild onions and ramps are totaly different.About 20 years ago the ramps in are area were getting dug by people who would just dig the whole patch, and not leave any to grow.My dad and I saw the writing on the wall and we dig some and planted the in a couple hollows on our place. Now I am enjoying two nice private patches of ramps, and dig enoungh for my use and leave the rest to carry on.They are quit tasty.

I'm going to try to transplant some to my property and not tell where they are.  First I have to find a few.

Like was said, ramps (also called leeks) and wild onions are very much different.  I have lots of both here on my farm and we have been digging and cooking with them since i was a kid..  One way i REALLY like them, is to make deep slits in a ham and push pieces of ramp into the ham, stuffing it...  Boy, does that ever make a GREAT tasting ham!!

Here's a couple picts i took while harvesting some ramps from my woodlot..

I tried to transplant some with no luck.  Maybe I was too late in the year.  Also, I think the deer ate some of my transplants.

The wife & I took a ride on the 4 wheelers last weekend to pick leeks on the mountain in back of your house. We filled 2 shopping bags. Now to make leek, potato & asparagus soup. We will freeze the rest.
