Filling a rucksack for a shooting rest?
« on: May 22, 2003, 01:48:36 AM »
I made myself a set of tripod shooting sticks to use with the contender and I don't like them.  I don't reliably get the steadiness I need for long shots at game.  They're also a hassle to carry.

Shooting from a prone position is much better because it's as steady as shooting from a bench, so I want to set up a rucksack that's filled with stuff that makes it a good shooting rest.   What do you use that works well?  I need something with enough loft to fill the sack, but not too springy.  Thanks.

Oooh! Ahhh!  I think rice would be just about perfect. I think Pure rice would be too heavy, so maybe some batting material that they use for quilts and rice.

:-D I have recently started using packing peanuts in my uncle buds shooting bag. I packed them in tight by hand and it is very light. :D

I vote for sawdust you can line your pack with a plastic trash bag for easy clean up or removeall. I have long filled field use bags this way good, density not too much weight. It will compact a little over time just add more.

i am assuming you want this relatively light for carrying.A couple of pounds of sand or Rice mixed with pillow stuffing in a leg from an old pair of jeans will last a long time.this will fit in your sack easily.Since jeans have 2 legs make another for when the vegetation is higher.use half the area in the "leg" for stuffing then add the sand.

My buddy rolls up bath towels and stuffs them in his pack. I have never tried it but he seems to like it

Scott.

I just use the normal everyday stuff I carry in my pack. I normaly have a extra jackit , gloves , hat roll ot T.P. extra knife and a porta umbrilla. htis gives me enough support if needed to be used as a shooting rest. and if i get wet or cold I am ready too
