Remington people,wake up!
« on: June 08, 2007, 02:38:10 PM »
Wow,where is everybody at on the Remington forum? Did everybody give up because Remington sold out? Not me. I just bought one of those ugly black SPS rifles in 22-250 Remington. Yep,bought it after buying a Savage Classic in 22-250 and have since been chasing around for a good load that I would be happy with out of the Savage but it was to much work.I through in the towel on that one and went out and got  the SPS,took the 4x12 Nikon off the Savage and mounted that on the Remington, bore sighted it and walked out back and printed a 3 shot group at .420 @ 100 yards, out of the box, with old handloads from my other 22-250 rifle. My worst group was just under an inch and a half and the sun was going down on me fast there. The SPS fits me better and actually the plastic stock seems to be a pretty good stock in my own opinion. I had a Bell and Carlson on a 270 Win. so plastic stocks aren't new to me,got one on the muzzel loader too.All in all,I much prefer a good looking wood stock but the black plastic stock and the all black matt finish rifle is really a more practical way to go after my predators of Fox and Yotes. The ground hogs are pretty wise to my shiny riles too and it is no fun waiting for them to show again after being flashed by bright shiny steel in my hay field. But now, look out buddy,I have the edge. My buddy bought a Savage too and it is the plain Jane with the black plastic stock too and it shoots nice tight groups also. I must have a real lemon in that fancy classic that has a for sale sign on it.I'm sure that with time,I'd get something good going with it but I am to impatient and I have never had a Remington that didn't live up to it's accuracy claims and they fit me better then any other rifle. Don't be afraid of the SPS,it's a nice rifle.

i'll take a Model 700, or a stainless-steel Model 7 with the 20" barrel, over any SSSssssaa :o :o   Ssssssaaaaavvvv :P :P  ......... any one of 'them' cheaply-stocked, button-rifled, Accu-triggered, blah, blah, blah, rifles that some praise so highly!    i am glad to see them being American-made, but wish that they were more decentlly stocked, and fitted with a barrel that was hammer-forged and would last longer than some of those 'foul-o-matics' they produce.     if i wasn't so fond of Remingtons and Rugers i would buy all my rifles in Weatherby Vanguard before buying SSsssssssaaaaa :-[ :-[ .............. i can't say it!

i'm glad to see you found a rifle that you like.

good hunting to you,

ss'

ps:  i only own one Vanguard, in .270 Win'.   but it's a great rifle.   it's a little heavy, but the stock is great (some don't think so!), the action is apparently strong, and the trigger is semi-adjustable for pull-weight.   it's not as decent of a rifle as my Model 700 ADL' Syn', but it is a damn-fine second-place winner.
Yet a little while and the wicked man shall be no more.   Though you mark his place he will not be there.   Ps. 37.

Don't take me wrong,I wasn't knocking Savage. In fact,I feel it is a very fine rifle and they are well made and good shooters.I see nothing wrong with them other then the one I had with accuracy issues and it is probably an easy fix.The Remington SPS was outstanding to me,right out of the box, looks or no looks. Clean, dirty, hot or cold,it laid the bullets right next to eachother. It seems to shoot everything well and that is the first rifle that I had in a very long time that I could say does that.I did adjust the trigger down to a nice crisp 3 pound pull and for a carry/hunting rifle,I refuse to go below that purely for safety reasons. My adjustment passed all the safety tests and couldn't tell you the difference between the factory trigger or the Timney trigger on my other Remington's. Yep,I think the SPS,found a home in the safe along with my other jewels .

In regards to it being quiet around here, personally I'm very busy with work. I'm surprised our leader hasn't emailed me asking where the hell I've been and questioning my Moderator abilities(He'd have every right to do so). That brings up another point....

If anyone ever needs to get a hold of me for any reason, private message me and I'll check in here ASAP. It helps that we are well mannered around here(Thanks!).

Back on topic.......

Glad you love the SPS  ;D

As for Savage, I won't waste my time talking about other companies, life is 2 short. I like what I like and for rifles and shotguns, it's ONLY Remington for me so......

I haven't bought anything in a while, it may be time to change that!

Everytime I am about to buy a Savage, my eyes can't seem to understand the looks and mechanics of the Bolt.

The only Savages I own are a Model 340 .22 Hornet and a Model 311 12 Gauge Double Barrel.

I have yet to buy a newer Bolt Action Savage, because of that DUMB-LOOKIN, SCREW-PROTRUDING   Bolt.

nomosendero has forced my hand. I will be ordering the new 700 XCR Tactical in .308 in the coming days. I can't wait to see how the new trigger setup is. I didn't mind adjusting the stock triggers to my liking, only takes 15 minutes once after you've done a few. But the reports I've heard about the new trigger have all been nothing but praise. Clean and crisp with most breaking under 3lbs out of the box...sign me up!
