Help with handgun selection for conceal and carry?
« on: May 11, 2007, 04:19:23 AM »
I am going to get my permit and I have a 38 special Taurus revolver.  I would like to get a 911 that is reliable, easy to carry and ability to stop a timberwolf, rabid animal, or wild dogs.  I have a cabin and I would like to use it for my walks.  I am way out in the boonies and while I may never use this handgun for protection it would provide peace of mind.  I need help with what model and caliber.   Thanks  Buckfever

When I worked as a LEO, we were restricted to carrying a 38 special or larger caliber. We were not allowed to carry anything under the power of 38 special. Your 38 special should serve you for what you have mentioned. If you want a pistol that you can carry stuck in your belt, a semi-automatic is easier to carry that way due to the flatness of it. My personal carry pistol is a Sig P220 .45 acp. I carry mine for a couple of reasons, I like the accuracy of it, how it feels in my hand and I prefer the .45 acp caliber better for my use. One of the 9mm semi-automatics would also be a good choice.

I'm not sure from your post whether you are meaning a 1911 type pistol, or just a general recommendation on any type handgun, so I'll give you my 2 cents worth on both.  For the 1911 type semi-auto,  unless you are familiar with their function and controls, I'd stay away from one that has too many bells and whistles. Stick with a mil-spec type,  in your price range, from Springfield, Kimber, Colt, Charles Daly, etc., depending on your budget.  Get you some 230gr. hollow points  and practice with it alot, like 500 rds, until you are comfortable with it and the controls and functions come natural to you. There are other semi-autos that you may feel are easier to master, there are a lot of quality double action pistols, any from the major names will fit the bill, the Springfield XD, SIG, Berretta, etc. pick a caliber that starts with a "4" and you'll have enough gun to dispatch your pests.

Now on the other hand, I wouldn't pick an automatic as my dangerous game, feral pest, backwoods packing gun. I'd go with a good 4" or 5" revolver, like a Ruger redhawk in .44 mag, or even a .357 like the GP100 would do nicely. Personally, I pack a Ruger Bisley .45 Colt, 5 1/2" with a stiff load of Hornady 250grXTP's as my all around gun, it does a number on armadillos and possums around here, and has plenty of power for bigger critters too. Whatever you decide, get a good supply of ammo and practice, practice, practice, until you feel confident  with it.

Unfortunately, what makes a good conceal carry weapon doesn't always make a good trail packing gun,  but you can always compromise in either direction and get the job done. I'm sure others will chime in with better recommendations, but thats my 2 cents worth-

Hope this helps-

What's wrong with the .38?  With a good bullet it's a good enough stopper.  It ain't a .44 mag or a .45 Colt loaded up, but at personal defense ranges, it should serve nicely.  Invest the money in bullets or a reloading setup and practice, practice, practice.

if your willing to buck up and pay a little more for a good 1911 a kimber cdp is hard to beat. Ive had two of them and they were very accurate and extreamly reliable and set up from the factory as about the ulitmate ccw 1911. Ive allways said that i consider them one of the best ccw gun at any price. But expect to pay around a grand for a new one.

Or a nice Colt Defender, about $850.  Light, handy, easy to carry, and best of all, it's a .45!  44 Man

how bout a 10mm. glock ?  , a lot less cost , better weather resistance , lighter for power , holds a bunch of bullets , easy to reload , not pretty but ya can restore the edge on a knife with the side of the slide !
just an idea ! oh yea kicks less than a 44 mag. and hits harder than a 45 acp !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
