Does anyone know the quality of the steel used in these knives? They make one that is almost a clone to the Uncle Henry I carry every day. POWDERMAN.

I looked at the ones listed in the Smokey Mountain Knifeworks fall catalog, and when they list the steel at all(except as "stainless") they say it's "400 series" stainless.  Old trick the factories use, i.e. when they list a blade as "440 series" steels, they almost always mean 440A instead of the higher quality 440C.  I mean, if they were using 440C you could bet your boots they would surely say so.  In this case, I suspect "400 series" means 420 stainless, which is the bottom of the barrel as far as stainless goes in knives.  Can't think of any other 400 series out there, now that 425M(Bucks old steel) doesn't seem to be around anymore.

JOEL. Thanks for the response. Walmart carries them, even in the locked case. Winchester seems to be trying to clone some of the Schrade patterns. POWDERMAN.  :D  :D

I work for WalMart and I wouldn't waste my 10% discount on any of the ones they currently display.  Keep in mind though that I'm prejudiced in the favor of high performance knives.  By that I don't mean the high end expensive ones....just ones with steel that holds an decent edge for a decent amount of time/work.

i got a set last CHRISTmas that was a 3" fixed blade and the multi-tool. i like em cause they look good and hold an edge reasonably well. if you get them wet they will rust, and the wood has a bad reaction to water too. with the pliers i found after repeated openings the screws start to work loose. big pain to fix.i broke the tip of the fixed blade when i hit it against a rock while cleaning fish. hmmm. maybe they ain't that great of a knife. i'm going to go buy another old timer before they disappear.
