Round barrel versus octagon (Henry)?
« on: May 17, 2007, 12:07:48 PM »
I see the Henry offers a couple different versions of a barrel, what is the difference? The standard .22 is $80 less than the octagon barrel model.. Is it just a cosmetic thing or is there some structural value to an octagon barrel?
If it is about structure than is is that significant? I like round, and I also like $80 cheaper.

Thanks!
David

It is quite a lot more difficult to make an octagon barrel than a round one, round is dead easy, any other shape requires a few more steps.  If they are of simular weight I would say they will shoot the same, the bullet can only see the inside.  Larry

There will be vibration differences, and also likely some increased weight with the octagonal barrel.  Will it really matter on a .22 rimfire?  my guess is I wouldn't be able to shoot any better with one than the other.  I doubt a rimfire will get the barrel whipping around much.  Get the one that turns you on.

Problem is they both turn me on..

The other hitch is that the octagon has to be ordered, the round can be picked up today. Thanks for the input guys, it is much easier to make a decision now..

Pydpiper,

Well the thing about the octagon barrel is supposedly they are supposed to be able to cool faster because flat surfaces cool faster than round surfaces. Also they look more traditional so that is why they still make them. They are harder to make which would cause the higher price and I am sure the fact that you have to order them don't help much. Unless you are using it for competition I would just stay with the round unless you just like the looks of the octagonal barrel.

The octagon version has a metal barrel band, the round has a plastic one, I believe.
I also like the reversible bead sight on the H001T(octagon). Check it out to be sure.  :)

Disagree, depends on the sport. Lots of the rifles used in the black powder cartridge shoots are octagon and shoot as good as any round barrel. They also are "target guns"  Like was said before the bullet does not know what shape the barrel is it is the inside that counts.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I prefer the H001T (octagon) to the H001 (round). The standard sights that come with the H001T are superior to the H001's. Both sights are removable on the H001T.  If you want to add a peep sight to the H001T you will need to put a taller front sight on. This can't be done on the
H001 because the front sight is not in a dovetail. If you are going to put a scope on your H001 then this is a non issue. I like the looks of the H001T over the H001 anyway.
