T/C Encore .17HMR barrel?
« on: April 07, 2007, 05:47:27 AM »
Anyone tried the new .17HMR barrel in their Encore? How accurate is it? What about bullet jump-how close to the lands? Overall how would you rate this barrel?

I've got a 17HMR Contender barrel from Virgin Valley.  This puppy shoots V-Max loads into 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards.  Using shooting sticks, I can regularly hit prairie dogs out to 200 yards.  However, the 17 HMR has a hard time killing PDs past 125 yards, and also starts dropping dramatically past that distance as well.

I've now got an Anschutz 17HMR enroute.  Should be here in a day or two.

BNoz01, What bullet are you using? I have had no trouble killing PD's out past 200yds with mine using the 17gr v-max. It's usually a pretty grusome kill to boot.  KN

Ballistics charts have them dropping 8.5-9 inches at 200 yards with the majority of the drop in the last 50 yards.  And both the 17 and the 20 grain pills have around 75 foot pounds of energy at 200 yards which should do the job with a good hit.

I have less problem with drop than with wind drift.  I need a nearly calm day to be real effective with either of mine.  But they are fun!  Mine are rifle and pistol barrels on a Contender (G2) frame.  I haven't seen anyone with a factory Encore rimfire barrel yet

My group has settled on the 17 grain V-Max load.  Most of the time when shooting past 100 yards we have a second shooter ready to fire.  Otherwise they are likely to crawl back to their hole wounded.

Most folks in my group won't bother to go out if the wind is past 10 mph due to the wind drift.

It would be good to know if these new barrels shoot, I would like to have one if they do, but they would just be another pry bar laying around if they don't.
