LV SF any comments?
« on: April 11, 2007, 01:32:46 AM »
I'm looking at getting the Light Varmint SF in  .223 or .22-250 probably .223 since the barrel is short though.  What do you guys think of it, it will be used for pdogs and a carry gun for coyotes.  What kind of accuracy can I expect out of the box?

I have two, one in 17 remington and one in .204.  Both will shoot 1/2 to an inch, when I do my job.  All I have done is adjusted the triggers.  I paid $599 and $625 for mine.  I am very satisfied with mine. :)

Does anybody have nice pictures of their LV SF, because there isn't enough on the Remington site, and there is none in town to look at between our 3 gun shops.

I've got one too in .223.  Sold a VLS in 243 for it, never looked back.

I bought one in 204. The rifle shot like hell. A short return to Remmy it came back shooting great. Now that its shooting fine, I love this rifle. I carried a Sako Varmint 22PPC through the snows for five years. I now sling the LVSF  and it feels like I forgot to bring a gun. The rifle now has been sent to an accuracy smith to free float, glass bed and drop the trigger down. If you need more photos let me know.

I finally got one in my hands the other day.  I think they look pretty nice.  Wondering between that and a Tikka Lite in stainless as well.  What caliber would you recomend for gophers and coyotes, with long range capabilites.  Is there one caliber that is more accurate then the other group wise?

I have one in 7mm-08.  I think it was a special run.  I´ve installed the scope but have not shot it yet.  Hoping to make it my mountain deer rifle.

Charles P,

I've got the same gun in 7-08 and it is one dang gun.  43.1 g varget with 139 Hornady is .50 MOA......And talk about dropping deer and hogs.....Would love to find this same gun in .243, if it was ever made....

$599!!!!!$625!!!!!!!Where I come from we're runin' close to Canada's prices. Saw one this last weekend for $879.00 in 204 Ruger. (WI by the way). They list in there catalog, '07, for a touch over a grand. I was wanting one since they came out, but just can't see where they can justify that obscene price tag, or more importantly, me paying it. Low and behold Savage comes to the rescue, maybe, with there Predator Hunter. Haven't saw one yet, but when I do a decision will have to be made. By the way, maybe its just me, but wouldn't  the LV SF have been the PERFECT platform to chamber the new 17 Fireball? CRASH87

I've had a REM LVSF in .223 since Nov 2005.  Initially it shot like crap "out of the box".  Barely 2 MOA if I was lucky.  Also had a problem with the extractor in that the cases were not chambering smoothly - had to really shove them home.  After a couple of trips back to the gun shop the extractor problem was fixed and I had a trigger job done as well as a bedding and floating job.  I reload using 40gr Vmax Hornadys and the thing now shoots like a bloody beauty (please excise the Aussie slang).  It now shoots 1/2 MOA.  I shoot mainly rabbits and foxes out to 200 yards and I get clean head shots most times.  Got a Leupold VXII 4-12 on it.  Enjoy the rfile - it's a beaut.

I don't like the Idea of spending $1000 bucks on a highend remington rifle and shooting 2 moa.  Then having to spend $xxx.xx to get a bedding job and trigger done.  I think I'm going to look at Tikka they seem to have a way better out of the box rep.

Since i've never modified a rifle before I have no idea of the cost.  What does it cost to Alum bed/float and drop the trigger to a respectable pull??

Takes about 15 minutes to adjust a Remington trigger.

It cost me about $150 (Aussie dollars - that's about $US120) to get the bedding, floating & trigger job done on my LVSF.  Even though the rifle originally shot 2 MOA "out of the box" I was told at the time that this was unusual and that I had purchased a bit of a lemon.  The accuracy job was needed to bring it up to scratch.   I feel it was well worth the extra cost as I now have a great varmint rifle just right for my needs.  Sorry about delay in replying but I have not had access to a computer for some time.
