Scope for Winchester Model 94 Angle eject.
« on: May 11, 2007, 06:05:23 AM »
Hi guys I have a Win. Model 94 Angle eject that I would like to get a good scope for.  I do not want to spend 200 dollars on a scope for a rifle that I will probably not shoot more than 200 yards with.  Most likely only shoot between 50-150 yards as I am from PA and live in Eastern NC.  I would like to get your suggestions as to what you would think is best.  For example;  Power of Magnification like 4x32, 3-9x32, 3-9x40, or so on.  Thanks guys!
When an Army captain asked him for the direction of the line of retreat, Col Puller called his Tank Commander, gave them the Army position, and ordered: "If they start to pull back from that line, even one foot, I want you to open fire on them."
Turning to the captain, he replied "Does that answer your question?
We're here to fight."

The reason for a quality scope is not the distance you shoot, but having it shoot the same place each time.  I have been let down by cheap scopes that loose zero to often to trust one on anything I want to hit what I am aiming at.

Having said that, I have had good luck with the low cost Leupold Rifleman scopes, and Bushnell Elite scopes.  I currently have a 2.5X7 on a Marlin lever 30-30 that I normally use for shots under 100 yards, and it has never been turned up more than 4 power for that.  This happens to be an old Japanese World Class Tasco.

I don't mean that I want to spend 40 dollars on a scope, but I want to get a good scope for 100-125 maybe 150.  Not anything 250-300 dollars though. I understand that they hold their zeroes better but I do not have the money for one like that either.  So I am trying to find the best scope I can buy for my budget.

I recommend you practice with the iron sights, or get a quality peep site system for the money you have to spend.  It is unlikely, in my opinion, that you will get a "quality" scope for that little money.  You may get lucky and find one that will last.  But you may have to buy two or three first.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I wouldn't put any more than a 2X7 on your Winchester, maybe even look at a 1.5X5 size. If you do any woods walking, and need a quick sight picture, the last thing you need is a lot of power on the low end of your scope. I'd look really hard at the Burris Fullfield II, Bushnell 3200, and the Weaver V7, all in 2X7X32, all are in the $150~175 range. I have a Browning BLR in .308 that I put a Leupold VXII 2X7X33 (out of your price range,$299) on and it is about a  perfect fit for a quick handling rifle. Bare minimum would be a Bushnell Trophy 2X7, at around $100, and on the other end you can get a Leupold VXI 2X7 for around $199. You'll find out that you'll only need the higher end of your scope when  you're sighting it in or playing at the range, but when you're hunting you'll keep it cranked down to the minimum, so you can find your target quickly  as it comes bouncing in front of you.  If you could find a retailer that has a large selection  to look at,  compare them and see which one gives you the quickest, clearest sight picture when you draw it up to your eye, and I'll be you'll come away with a good scope. If it were me I'd just buy the least expensive Leupold I could afford, and never look back. They have always been quickest and clearest to my eye, even the VXI and the Rifleman's Ive looked at.

I found a Leupold Rifleman at my local shop on sale for $150 so I bought that last night.  I really liked it and I think it will be really good for my Winchester as it is a woods gun. Thanks for all of your info guys!

You won't regret it.  Now use quality mounts and follow all the directions to the letter and you will be happy with the outcome.

I used millett bases and Millett rings.  I like it a lot I will shoot with it tomorrow and see how it goes.  I'll let you all know the outcome.

I used my 94 AE for close range and used williams peep rear. The only scope i tried and was comfortable with on the 94 for a Leupold 2.5 compact. That now sits on my Ithaca 37 12 gauge pump and i went back to the rear peep. My Dad uses a marlin 336 and for years now uses a bushnell trophy scope . Several of my friends use these on there 12 and 20 gauge shotguns. They are tough scopes that hold up and are very clear and there just under $100.00 Also the cabelas 3x9 and 4x12  pine ridge scopes have held up for years now on a couple of 30/06's and a 45/70 Another good under $100.00 scope

not much on scopeing leverguns but if i did a good straight 2x leupold or other quality scope like a nikon pentex B&L ect would go on it. Buying a scope is one place a guy should never go cheap. Ill put a cheap scope on a 22 but a gun that i hunt big game with i want reliablitity and good optics. Id rather have a 400 dollar scope on a 200 dollar rifle then a 50 dollar scope on a 500 dollar rifle. About any gun will shoot well enough to take game but none will with a bad scope.

How did you go Alien319?,

It is worth scoping the 94 AE, I have a .307 that averages 1.06" with a mix of 150 grain bullets and 1.38" with over 160 grain bullets. Can't wait to hear how you went.

Well I went to the range and was shooting around 1" at 100 yards and than tried shooting 200 yards with the new Hornady Leverevolution.  I was getting about 2- 2.25" at 200 yards.  It went well I believe.

Sounds like a keeper. ;)
Before I had my angle eject scoped, I considered Marlins to be more accurate than the Winchesters. Now I know that there's not much in it at all.
