Stevens 200 .223 not feeding correctly...
« on: May 24, 2007, 10:30:48 AM »
I bought a Stevens 200 .223 back about a year ago and have enjoyed shooting it. However, it will not feed anything with certainty. I have tried WWB 45 gr. HPs, Dogtowns 55 gr, and VMAX 55 gr bullets. Everything seems to get caught up not hitting the feed ramp correctly and goes into the chamber too steep. Anyone else have this problem with their 200? What was the fix?

I am having a somewhat similar problem.  I can not count on the second or third cartridge feeding.  Mine will just stay in the magazine.  A quick jab with my finger usually frees it but I shouldn’t have to do this.  As I use this rifle for target shooting mainly the problem has not been so great that I have taken it in to be worked on yet.  My .308 on the other hand feeds flawlessly.

I would be inclined to return it to the dealer, if possible. Mine has shown no problems as yet, but that would be my first idea.

I know this does not help your situation. I converted both of my Stevens 223's to single shots with a loading tray. I also pulled the ejector. Now I just pick out the case with my finger tip. No searchin' for cases in the grass and no bent case mouths ;D

I just was reviewing your original question about the feed ramp. You might be having the same problem I was with the 221 Fire Ball. I was using a single shot feed ramp. When I first got it put together, the cartridge would hang and I could not get it to go in the chamber. I could put my finger behind it and flick it in. It went in with little trouble. After some experimenting using a light and a rifle cleaning rest, I found the problem. I found the case mouth was hanging up on the edge of the chamber. The shoulder on the chamber was sharp enough to have the case mouth hang up on it. That little tiny thickness of the case mouth was hanging it up. :o I now knew what had to be done to get it to feed properly, but was hesitating because I had to tear the barrel off and knock off that corner on the chamber mouth. Finally got up the guts. I took off the barrel and run a case deburrer by hand into the chamber mouth. I took just a little off, just a little of the corner. Just enough that the case neck would not hang on the edge. It worked great. It now feeds smooth with out a hint of a hang-up. ;D

I had one that had that problem too,. I found that the sheet metal box magazine was crooked where it was attached underneath the barrel and had to adjust it over so that it was on straight and then put the action back in the box. I had bought the rifle new and called Savage about it.
They paid to have a gunsmith adjust it as opposed to sending it back to the factory.
It took a good while to get the check from them ($35), but I did get it.
The front of magazine box was sliding in the groove where it fits under the forward part of the action.  Mine would hang up the bullet nose when feeding from the magazine and this fixed it.
