Buffalo Bore Ammo

Has anyone hunted with the buffalo bore 300 gr jhp?  It's listed at 2350 fps, and I'm interested in using it for deer this year...but i'd like a review before I spend that much cash.

Kind of alot of money for deer round....I'm sure they'll work like lightning.....let us know how you do!

I am going to assume it is a 45/70 we are talking about.  I would think it would depend on the bullet used.  2350fps is fast for a bullet most likely designed for between 1200 fps out of a 45 LC revolver and 1700 or so fps out of a 454.  I would want to use either a Nosler PT or a Barnes all metal bullet at these speeds to minimize the chance of bullet failure.  That said, I am sure any 300 grain 45 cal bullet at that speed that hits a whitetail in the chest is going to work impressively.  The few times I have tried factory 300's (Winchester and Remington loaded slower) they have worked fine on small PA bucks, and one decent Maine whitetail.

I have witnessed 2 large deer, both weighing over 150 shot with this ammo.
One was from a Ruger #1 at about 180 yds.
It was a straight on shot that hit just at the base of the throat and exited just under the tail.
It dropped right there.
Internal damage was massive to the vitals but minamal to the hind quarters as it was a near perfectly straight pass through.
I am sure if it had been a little to one side it would have done considerably more damage.
The other was from a Handi rifle with synthetic stocks.
Not sure which got the worst of that one, the shooter or the deer!  
This was a quartering away shot at just over 200yds.
It hit about 6" behind the left shoulder and exited at the point of the right shoulder.
Wow, what damage.
Most of the right shoulder was mush!
He ran about 40yds.

They work, as long as you can take the recoil.

 First thing that comes ito my mind is WHY would you NEED 2350 fps? Unless your shooting that .45-70 at extended range like LongToms kills.  For normal ranges I'd say to save your money and use a std load. Or your own handload.

Yep, even if you don't want an expensive loading set-up, there are ways to get into loading.  I started with a Lee Classic loader in .45-70 for 20 bucks.  I also spent 17 dollars for a pound of Reloader7 powder, 28 bucks for a box of Hornady FTX 325gr. bullets, 3.99 for a box of primers and 42 bucks for 100 brass.  I paid 12 bucks for a lee dipper set and that was it.  Barely more than 2 boxes of buffalo bore bulets.  Also, I could vary the loads for different velocity tests with that bullet and you can safely and easily load it from 34 to 52 grains to get from light trap door loads to loads that'll take down about anything except brown bear in north america easily.  For big bear, you can pay just 25 bucks more and get 50 gas checked 400+ gr. leads and take them too.  Dipper load measuring won't get you quite minute of angle with this set-up, but I grouped about 1.5-2" with them at 100 yards.  I now use a scale and get .75" to 1-1/4" with a lee hand press and dies.    Good luck and happy hunting.

+1 on inexpensive loading. I also started with a Lee Loader, but got a Redding scale and trickled off eBay. Saved on bullets by ordering cast gas checks from Western Bullet. Varget and H4895 fire off laods comparable to BB for a lot less green....
