load data for 45-70 handi
« on: May 18, 2007, 03:09:40 PM »
Hi all

If anyone have any pet loads using hornady 350gr round nose, rem. 405gr. srn, or 405gr. cast plain base(no gas check). this would be helpful. Will be my first time loading for the handi.

Thank You
Hunter a.k.a. Darrel

28gr Alliant 2400 is an accurate and light recoil load, a favorite of several members here.

52.5gr of H322 provided a nice ½" 3-shot cloverleaf in the 32" BC barrel at 2027fps 53gr chrono'd 1850fps in the 22" Handi barrel, but accuracy wasn't as good, but right at 1¼", a little fine tuning would make it work in the 22" barrel. It was one of the loads I used for comparisons tween the 32" BC barrel and 22" Handi barrel. 45gr IMR4198 with the 350gr Speer FP was another that provided about 150fps more in the 10" of additional barrel, for what it's worth!! :D

The 350 RN Hornady has been my favorite in both the 22" handi and 22" Marlin 1895 super accurate and great on deer. My pet load is IMR 4198--45.0 grains.

If you are looking for a lighter load than those mentioned,  my Handi really likes my  load of a Rem. 405 gr. JSP on top of  32.0 grs. of IMR 4198.  COL 2.56 ".   This load will approximate original  trapdoor  velocities of 1350 FPS.   The load is very accurate, a clean, efficient burner, easy on both shoulder & gun and yet has  impressive penetration in tightly packed, wet news print.

Sorry, 350gr Hornady RN with 2400, IMR4198 and H322.

  Tim,

I have a BC and do wonder at times about the velocity difference because of the long tube, could you share some info concerning this or point me in the right direction? Thanks,
  Richard

Welcome to GBO, Richard!! My only comparisons have been with IMR4198 and H322 with the 350gr Hornady and 350gr Speer, and H4198 with the 300gr Nosler partition. Here's the report on the first two.

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,102319.msg1098277453.html#msg1098277453

A heavy dose of H4198 behind the 300gr Nosler in a 22" Handi provided 2425fps, the same load in the BC got just 2450fps.

I shoot and XLR in 45-70 and the best load I have found is 50 gr. IMR 4064 over 350 gr, Hornady FN. Less than 1MOA consisiently--no balogna!!!

Darrel,

My favorite load for 45-70 in the Handi is 405 gr plain base cast bullet with 38.0 grains of IMR 3031.  I usually use a small wad of dacron to keep the powder in position and to protect the base of the bullet.  Some folks don't agree with the "protect the base of the bullet" but I seem to get less leading when I use it.

The reason I like this load so much is accuracy and it doesn't tear up my shoulder, only about 1300 fps, but that big 405 grain bullet doesn't need a lot of velocity to penetrate deeply.
