Black Mag 3
« on: May 04, 2007, 01:00:48 AM »
Just did a little search for Black Mag 3 Gun Powder  I came up with MDM muzzleloaders web site seems they developed a new bullet with the black mag powder attached almost like hornadys bullet with the pellets attached check it out either use www. mdm-muzzleloader.com or www.magkor.com
Iv'e been trying to get some in the loose powder form tried several times to reach Magkor but never got a response Maybe they were in the process of turning the Powder rights to MDM
Looks like something new to try

Good luck finding it, and when you do, expect to pay a lot more for it.  It is not a popular powder anywhere, all the gun shops I go to, no one carries it.

When Magkor was really pushing this stuff, maybe three years ago, they called BlackMag3 "noncorrosive" in their advertising.
I bought a pound of it.
It is not non corrosive.

Just curious! How did you determine it was corrosive?

The only way to test for that is firing it without a bullet, rifle primer, plastic sabot, swabbing liquid, gun oil or humidity present - then letting the gun sit for a long time in an opened air environment.

I love the stuff, but I'm almost out.  I need to get more, but I tried emailing and calling Mag-kor several times last year but I got no response from them.  I just emailed MDM to see what the cost would be.

I think it would be wise to find something that works well and is readily available. JMHO  ;)

Those are novel suggestions for the experiment. Do you believe a plastic sabot or a lead bullet, or primer to be corrosive? I don't understand your point.
My experiment was conducted with a cap and ball pistol. I fired one cylinder.
Thank God, I ran a patch down the bore of my expensive pistol after firing. I did not clean the cylinder or the hammer.
I let the pistol set for 4 weeks in a drawer before I checked up on it. I had meant the experiment to go only for a week. Good plan, bad implementation. This was in the mountains of North Carolina, high humidity.
When I checked my Uberti, the cylinder was covered with red rust, as was the hammer.
I spent three hours cleaning my poor pistol up. It did clean up ok and works fine now.
No more expensive, scarce MagKor stuff for me.

By the way, I liked the performance of BlackMag3. It had a little more power than black powder. It was easier to clean up than bp.

On a whim, I picked up several pounds of the black mag 3 at Cabela's two years ago.  If memory serves, it was about $30 a pound.  I got into shooting the Savage and forgot about the Black Mag in the safe.  The Savage went down the road, so I guess it is time to try the Black Mag in my Disk Extreme.  The Knight shoots well with T7, but the crud ring is a bear.  If anyone has any experience shooting this stuff in a Knight, please post.

Black Mag'3 is non-corrosive to steel; but some of the byproducts of combustion of this powder is moisture (most of the white smoke is actually steam). If left alone without cleaning the leftover moisture and powder which tends to draw more moisture can cause rust so not cleaning well is a bad thing. My recent contact with Magkor indicates that they are very close to a merger that will make the powder more available in more areas. I personally have had good results with the powder but can say that it seems to perform best in longer barrel rifles. The light-off time is somewhat slower than Tripple Seven and in the short barrels T-7 seems to outperform it. In the longer barrels like my Omega it outperforms equal volume of ffg Tripple Seven with less felt recoil due to the slower initial light-off. Tripple Seven is sharp and in my opinion painful due to the sharp recoil associated with quick light-off. The big advantage is that Tripple Seven makes such a bad crud ring in my Omega that it is almost impossible to use with any decent shooting/cleaning/swabing drill. Black Mag'3 is so clean that multiple shots without a swab between are possible.
