Range report on my new Tikka in 243.
« on: May 17, 2003, 03:16:42 PM »
As most of you already know, I love Tikkas, and today I got a chance to shoot my new Tikka Hunter Stainless Synthetic in .243.  I have a Nikon Monarch 3x-9x-40mm mounted in Silver Warne Maxima Rings - it's a beautiful set-up.

I was using cheap 100 grain Winchester Power Points (just to break it in - I will use premium ammo on game when the time comes).

Anyway, I got 3/4" groups at 100 yards, and that was with a junky gun rest (I forgot my nice one at home).  Also, it was quite breezy and windy today.  So 3/4" groups isn't bad.

The Tikka cycled the ammo in and out as smooth as silk, and the trigger was set at the factory at about 3 pounds (or so I estimate).

What a great gun.  It's hard to believe that it is a factory gun.  It feels, and shoots, like a custom rifle.

Tikka - what more can I say?  :-D  :)  :-D  :)  :-D  :-D  :)  :-D

Like you've said for quite a while . . . For shooting out of the box (or any other way) the Tikka is hard to beat.  I dont know about the bigger calibers but the 243 rules in the Tikka. :)

What more can ya say? How about saying Browning Model 1885 Low Wall.  :)

Mine shoots some ammo into 3/4" groups at 100 yards but only that stuff it don't like. The stuff it likes it keeps under 1/2". It is absolutely unreal. I traded that Ruger #1 that won't keep much of anything on an 8.5"x11" target sheet and got this rifle and it shoots dang near everything into 0.4"-0.8" all the time. With it if I miss I know dang well who to blame and it ain't the gun.

Zachary, glad you like your new Tikka, but then I knew you would.  Shooting great groups.  Tell me when you shoot the 200 yd. line and what kind of groups you get.  I love my Tikka 270, waiting on the rings so I can take it out and shoot it.

Unfortunately, the range where I shoot does not have a 200 yard range.  All they have is just a 100 yard range. (Miami is not known for being a shooter's paradise - fishing yes, but hunting and fishing - no).

I'm sure that, with a good rest and better ammo, I'll get better results.  And hopefully it won't be so windy next time.  Also, I'm not exactly the best shooter either.

I too can't wait for you to get your rings so that you can shoot your 270. :D

:D Zachary, my Tikka SS Syn .243 loves 80gr Remington PSPs! Under 1/2" out of the box!!! I'm glad Longwinters was with me as a witness, otherwise no one would believe it.

They (Sako/Tikka) really get it done.

I'm almost certain that I'll get my groups to about 1/2" or better.  The thing is that it was windy and I didn't have a good rest that day at the range.

80 grain is a little light for me (for use on big game at least).  I'm trying to shoot the 100 grainers first. (but when it comes time for coyotes, I think that the varmint loads in the 243 will be awesome!

I tried 55gr Vmax Hornady, 100 gr Rem, and the 80gr Rems. I was setting up for coyote.
For deer I would opt for 100 gr NPs. The 100gr werent bad at all, about 0.80" groups at 100 yds.
