Valdez halibut fishing
« on: June 29, 2007, 08:21:24 AM »
I'm looking to do a halibut charter the first week of September. Wondering if this particular time frame is conducive to cathing 'buts, or if captains are closing shop at that time. Also, is Valdez even a good option to begin with? Seems Homer & Seward get all the attention, but I wonder if that is likey due to the close proximity to Anchorage. I'm trying to get off the beaten path and I also want to make the drive to Valdez due to the outstanding scenic views.

The sport fishing laws change from year to year so I am not familiar with current conditions as to road side silver fishing.  There are some silver fishing along the Copper River a short distance from the Richardson Highway to Valdez.  Prince William Sound has halibut all year long.  You can charter from there or Whittier in Sept.  The best bet for contacting charter operators is to request info from the Chamber of Commerces at both locations and post in the newspaper in Valdez.  The Internet has some contact info too.

Yep, all year for butt.  The only difference we see in Seward, is that some people have noticed some smaller fish coming farther into shore during the winter.  Whether that is true or not, I dont know, but it is what they say they have noticed.  And yeah, we do get a lot of attention, homer cause of their derby, and seward is just a big old attention monger when it comes to tourism.

Captains should want to get as much business as they can in september, cause that is the end of the tourist season up here, so it is where they will not have too many people.  Close to valdez, there isnt much in the way of silver fishing (besides in the ocean its really good) that I know of, but like deltecs was saying up the road off of the highway in places like the copper they are good.  I would recommend making silver fishing one day, and then going to valdez for halibut another, unless you want to catch both in the ocean, there are still silvers running in september, then valdez it is.

If you can find a seat, No Excuses is the boat to go out on.  Dave B. is the best in the area.  For shore fishing, Allison Point, a few miles out of town offers the best.  You can limit out daily and the area has been completely refurbished last year with parking areas and better access.
